Triplehead Ghost Recon

Posted by Rocky on Friday, April 2 2010

Everyone knows that Ghost Recon looks fantastic widescreen, but how about superwide triplehead 5040x1050 across three monitors? That's what forum member Thales100 has been trying, with great success.

GHOST RECON

Remarkably, the original (almost 10 years old) Ghost Recon supports these high resolutions and offers them as an option from the ingame settings. Thales explains..

...the most surprising maybe is that the HUD nor the reticle become stretched, no matters at which resolution or aspect ratio you run the game, that's a quite uncommon behavior for older titles, not even seen in GRAW and GRAW 2"

You can download the superwide screenshots in the forums here, and also check out these other superwide screeshots from Thales; Doom3, Quake4, Wings of Prey, Assassin's Creed 2.

Splinter Cell Conviction Co-op

Posted by Rocky on Friday, February 26 2010

Ubisoft game designer Patrick Redding speaking at Microsoft's X10 showcase has quoted Ghost Recon co-op as a major influence on the design of the latest Splinter Cell title.

a lot of my own personal feelings about co-operative play in Conviction were strongly influenced by the campaigns in Ghost Recon, Gears Of War 2 and Left 4 Dead - it's just trying to find ways to encourage players to work together without necessarily forcing them to by making them jump through the bottle neck"

But then we've always known that Ghost Recon co-op is the best!

Ghost Recon Xbox Send Off

Posted by Rocky on Tuesday, February 16 2010

You may have heard by now that Microsoft is shutting down Xbox Live for original Xbox games, and that of course includes Ghost Recon. It's a sentimental time for members of the original development team, so Christian Allen is setting up a special send off for Xbox Live Ghost Recon in April.

Full details of the send off, plus some important points to note if you do not want to miss out on DLC before the shut down are all on his blog. It's going to be a special few days so make sure you are ready to join!

Blood Oil Released

Posted by Rocky on Thursday, December 24 2009

Here's the second Christmas gift we have for you, and what a cracker it is. Blood Oil is a massive mod for Ghost Recon featuring a full fledged campaign with new maps, missions and much more. The lucky few who have been beta testing Blood Oil have been blown away by the quality of the content, and having seen the first map I can understand why; this mod is going down in history as one of the best ever released for Ghost Recon.

Many modders have contributed to this mod which has had a rocky road to release. It almost never saw the light of day, if it wasn't for a band of dedicated Ghost Recon modders.  So many thanks to Tinker for pulling it all together and all the contributing modders for their awesome talents and the time they put into this huge mod, eventually released after 2 years in development.

Download Blood Oil here, and read all about it in our Ghost Recon forums here.

Bonus : Although Blood Oil is a serious campaign that you can (and should) really immerse yourself in, just for laughs Tinker has created a chicken shooting quad biking challenge for anyone with Blood Oil installed. Read about it and download it here.

Operation Save Santa 3

As is customary for the Christmas Season we are pleased to announce a new Save Santa mission for Ghost Recon! Tinker has put together a brand new Ghost Recon map featuring lost reindeer to round about, a missing Santa and his sleigh, featuring appropriate music for the season.

Download this fun Ghost Recon Christmas mission here.

Try the Demo!

Posted by Rocky on Saturday, December 12 2009

With the Ghost Recon Gold Pack (UK | USA) containing the original Ghost Recon and both expansions being available so cheaply now it might be difficult to justify trying the demo first. But that is exactly what BrightHub is suggesting, in its Must Try FPS article, and we can't really blame them.

If you've stumbled across GhostRecon.net and are wondering why we are still here almost a decade after the game was released, try the demo and see for yourself. Then imagine those stock campaign missions enhanced with hundreds of modders custom content like camo, weapons, vehicles and new missions created with features never even thought of by the developers.

BrightHub may be more of a tech site than a games site, but they are right on the money with the Ghost Recon demo suggestion!

Youtube user Contaan has put up a collection of Ghost Recon Walkthroughs that are worth checking out, expecially if you made the mistake of uninstalling Ghost Recon at some point. Contaan has done a great job of highlighting what is so great about Ghost Recon thanks to his running commentary and knowledge of the game and missions.

We've interviewed Contaan and reveal his motivation for making the videos, how he managed to do it using all free software and which missions gave him a few problems. Links to all his Ghost Recon movies are also included.

GRPA Version Update

Posted by Rocky on Thursday, September 17 2009

This might have slipped in under the radar because it's a version update rather than a full blown new mod - nevertheless this is one to take note of.

Elmer Fudd Ghost Recon Challenge

The challenge was produced by Phlookian as an interesting aside to one of the P2 missions, but also to showcase the variety of effects that he managed to code into this particluar map.

So if you like hunting wildlife (wolves, birds and fish!) install P2 A Cold Day in Hell, then download the Elmer Fudd Challenge and remember to post your score in our forums here. I believe there is a prize for anyone who manages to beat my score!

"P2: A Cold Day in Hell" Released

Posted by Rocky on Saturday, May 30 2009

After six years in the making, the P2 development team around Migryder just released "P2: A Cold Day in Hell" - a colossal new mod for Ghost Recon with a huge campaign consisting of 24 brand new missions that pit the Ghosts against an old archenemy - a Russian separatist movement that threatens to plunge the world into a nuclear war.

The mod comes with far more new content than could possibly be listed here, suffice it to say that pretty much everything in the game has been overhauled - maps, weapons, characters, vehicles, UI, sounds, music, videos - the whole lot, so it comes as no surprise that P2 weighs in at just short of 2 GB installed (575Mb zipped download). But rest assured: Your download time and disk space are certainly worth it!

To sum it up: Do not miss this next chapter in Ghost Recon history! Download here, forum discusion here! (If you cannot download a 575Mb file, it is available on DVD here).

DYNACOMP Released

Posted by Rocky on Wednesday, January 28 2009

That's a headline nobody expected to see, as DYNACOMP had become known as the greatest Ghost Recon mod never released. However, more than 5 years after it's conception, DYNACOMP is indeed released, with a caveat; the mod is incomplete - but playable. Parabellum has released this mod as-is, although modders who may wish to complete any aspect of the mod can contact him directly.

Download DYNACOMP here, activate it as normal, and launch it as a New Campaign. You'll start on top of the embassy, good luck!

Life in the Game

Posted by Rocky on Wednesday, December 10 2008

There have been quite a few fan made Ghost Recon movies over the years, but nothing quite like Life in the Game, Letter from a Henchman. This short movie concentrates more on story than action, and in doing so takes Ghost Recon machinima to a new level. Thanks to ApexMods for finding this golden nugget, and props to the author Frank Fox at FlingFilms.com for his awesome movie!
