  1. Won't go into gun details as that always kicks off storms of opinions back and forth. I've shot all these guns except the Crye rifle of course so I can tell you they are realistic. However you have to try them in game and make your ultimate judgement. But I can brief you on our rules for choice and design: 1. Realistic combat behavior (handling, noise, weight, mag, stability, fire modes, mods, penetration). This is a must as long as it does not compromise rule 2, in case it has to be adapted or removed. 2. Benefit to gameplay. As long as it does not compromise rule 3. We do not add a gun or feature of a gun if it does not bring anything to the gameplay. Thus having 12 versions of the basic M16 is not an otion. 3. Balance. A SAW should not be as accurate as a Sniper rifle etc. If you have lots of ammo you should have lots of weight - lots of weight should imply less acccuracy after running etc. Logic chain and balance of the weapons. The PC does carry a different set up then the X360 - lots of similar choices but some different based on our different SP and MP style of gameplay. For us it is important that the player understands and feels the gameplay difference in the weapons and the use of the weapons in a tactical sense both individually and for the team. ← Bo, I hope this is an appropriate follow up - will there be bullet drop? Will rounds travel in a modified parabola or with a flat trajectory? How about wind drift? thanks.
  2. I guess i am re-thinking my previous answer - if the goal is to get this game to the widest audience possible, there has to be some level of tastefulness about the way violence is represented. And let's face it, at some point market factors drive these aspects of the game. Essentially, if given the choice between graphically realistic imagery which would be severely restricted as to whom it could be sold, and actually restrict sales, or imagery within the range of what is considered acceptable by current standards that could have a wide audience and not hurt sales, I want whatever is going to help them sell games.
  3. I didn't read the whole thread, but what was decided about making the cut? thanks
  4. what exactly is a kneetop? is it kinda like a pilot's knee clipboard deal? is it on your knee, or is it just smaller than a laptop... ← I have a scan of a pic...I wonder how I could get it to you? (my little voice says I might as well try to walk on the moon - I am not good at computer stuff)
  5. to get this back on topic, and to add a completely uneduated computer question, when they toned down the bloom in high dynamic range lighting, did that change teh muzzle flash?
  6. I've already committed to buying two copies, and I will support GRIN in any other way possible.
  7. Is it kind of like what the SEALs in Tears of the Sun used? One of the SEALs had a laptop and he was able to spot/track the large enemy force that was followig them through the jungle. I also remember seeing a show on the discovery channel, I think it was called "Survive". One episode was about how a SEAL team resuced an under cover CIA agent from some rebels in South America. The SEALs used some sort of hand held device/computer that allowed them to spot the movement of a rebel patrol that was moving towards them. silent_op ← I did not see that movie, but this is not a laptop, it is a kneetop
  8. specter, small arms generally means a weapon an individual soldier can carry. in 17 years of .mil experience i have not heard of medium arms or heavy arms. "heavy arms" is what my ass has after carrying the 60 all day! haha. A lot depends on teh context the phrase is used in, but heavy weapons are generally mortars, artillery, tanks, etc. again, doesn't really matter and at some point it's like trying to split a hair.
  9. real life? think again. in the game, your guess is as good as mine.
  10. specter - could that be the 'MOD 0" with the short barrel? if so, the short barrel could account for the flash. I'm not comparing myself to anyone but I honestly don't recall noticing muzzle flash from a standard length 60 barrel in the daytime. At some point it becomes like asking how many angels can dance on the head of a needle.... If anyone is interested, I have some video of yours truly firing the 60, and the mark 19. can I have the demo now?
  11. I have several images I am willing so scan and send if anyone wants to see - just that I am not too good at posting images and may need some help with it. Electronic data manager (a kneetop computer - straps around the leg.) Class I UAV (looks like the small flying things from Halflife 2) Class II UAV (same, with greater range) Class III (small plane) Class IV (small helicopter) Unattended ground sensor The images and data are from "Soldiers" magazine, and it says "material may be reprinted provided credit is given to Soldiers and the author" so we ain't giving away no secrets
  12. i forgot to say - the most currently tested device for fielding in the near future is a kneetop computer, like a tough PDA. I have images I might be able to upload to Rocky for display. These terminals can display MCS light, a mapping program, which can receive feeds which display current friendly/enemy positions. The software can display a division, or a single soldier.
  13. If I understand the question, I'd like to see a lower quality cross com screen image. Why? that's realistic. Higher resolution takes more power, and remember the soldier is carrying his power on his person. Every ounce of battery replaces an ounce of water or a round of 5.56. In the field, these screens take abuse so with all the scratches on the screen a high res image would soon be clouded by an opaque screen, resulting in lower quality than what the soldier would see with his naked eye.
  14. ← well, please accept my apology if I said something the wrong way, but I did not intend to glorify death - it makes me sad and disturbed. My description was factually accurate, not intended to glorify death. let me add one thing: as a soldier you come to love your fellow soldiers like brothers, I can't describe it any other way, and hopefully former soldiers here may agree. When a brother is taken from you by the enemy, it changes the way you see the enemy's death. and if you ever, as a commander at any level, have to tell his mom the circumstances of his passing, you will see the enemy's death a different way. each one is like a piece of candy. so sorry, and I will try to remember others see this differently than I do.
  15. i'm getting more confused by this - no one said killing is good, just that it is necessary sometimes. If you don't like the notion of taking life, why play this simulation? What worries me tremendously are those people who can somehow disjoint a simulated killing from a real one - these are the kids that load up a shotgun and go to the first public place them can find and just start shooting people. in the US military, we kill people and break their toys. You are free to dislike that, but the freedom of the American people rests solely with the willingness of the sheepdogs that keep the wolves away. You may not like me, because to a sheep a sheepdog looks too much like a wolf for their comfort... I say as to the notion that it promotes violence, sugarcoating a killing is more dangerous than making it look real, for some kids might think all killing consists of the canned death animations of the original GR. Hope no one takes offense, but I look at killing a little differently than some I suppose. That's my job...
  16. OH, I forgot to give any kind of list so here goes 1. Sound 2. Recoil Effect, loss of sight picture 3. loss of hearing, instead you hear a thin ringing for a while 4. there is surprisingly little "effect" with real gunfire. Maybe kicking up dust on full auto, but as for smoke, there is little and what you have coming out of the breech the breeze takes away. 5. you really see muzzle flash on shorter weapons, like the M-4.
  17. has to be artwork, there is no way that is gameplay
  18. What are powerful death animations? The ones presented in that cowboy movies? Or the real ones, much more unspectacular? ← you ask what is real? I would like to see a lungshot to cause the target to spew a pink spray of blood with every breath, and make a wheezing sound since he didn't have enough air across his vocal cords to scream. So along those lines will be fine. as far as death animation, what you really see is people grabbing what they think was hit, sometimes even the target can't tell right away and they have to look for blood. The only other animation you'd see is the target crawling away to perceived cover. this is where you can re-engage and terminate the target.
  19. this is a great place to be, with some very decent people. i wasn't aware there were any other GR sites. So hang around, I think you'll like it.
  20. for realism, sound and sight are equally important. When the round leaves the muzzle, the recoil causes the shooter to have to regain a proper sight picture. Even on a 5.56 which is a .22 caliber round with a lot fewer ft/lbs of energy than something like the M2 HB .50, the recoil requires the shooter to take steps to regain a proper sight alignment when using iron sights or ACOG. In reality, you also have the smell of the cordite, the feel of the recoil.
  21. I remember when I first played GR for the first time - man was I shocked when the AI kept just KILLING ME! I thought, "wow, this is a different kind of game! I better pay attention!" I am just wondering if we'll have the same kind of "wow" moment that says - you better pay attention, this is almost REAL! In law school, we studied the concepts of primacy and recency, primacy being - the first 5 minutes, getting their attention, and recency is leaving them with something to remember. do we have any information on what the first 5 minutes of GRAW campaign will be like? I wonder if it will be more story, or more action?
  22. if they delay PC game another 6 months, some of you guys will buy the 360. I will not.
