Well, good news everyone...I bought IL-Sturmovik today and hopefully I'll get a chance to play it tomorrow. I've been thinking about purchasing the game, and when a thread was started, I followed some of the comments when it came to a point that I could stand no longer...I WANT THE GAME!!!

uh..ok...so give me a few days to get used to not crashing everytime and I'll maybe join up with ya'll sometime for games. I'm running a Logitech Wingman ForceFeedback joystick for the record too.

Hail the Axis Powers...um wait...I can't say that here can I?

well... I fly german planes almost exclusively... and when FB comes out I will be flying the Dora (and the Dora only).

Anyone brave enough to come after me then with a Hurry or a P47 or a La7 will surely sacrifice his life for his country.

I just played the demo, WOW. You guys were talking about how hard it is to take off, didn't have any problems with that, but the inflight, now that was hard. My plane would start spinning and I couldn't get it out of the spin, that bites.

How long is the learning curve with this bad dog? It's almost to realistic, if there is such a thing.

How long is the learning curve with this bad dog? It's almost to realistic, if there is such a thing.

It depends on what learning curve you are talking about.

Taking off, landing and basic navigation manouvers ... I would say that after 2-3 days you should be able to safely take off, do some circles and land safely.

Being able to stay in a fight with AI turned all the way down and flying an easy plane (NOT the germans bf109 or the fw190) that would take about a week or 2. It all boils down on how stubborn you are to understand that you GOTTA STOP PULLING on the stick. If the plane shakes you gotta ease off the stick or you will stall at high speed and flat spin. (it took me a while to learn how not to overdo the turns  I am kinda stubborn).

That plus the fact that you have to get used to the idea that you can shoot a plane ONLY when you are less than 200 meters away (the plane is as big enough to almost fill your crosshair from side to side).

BCM is a totally different beast. (BCM = Basic Combat Manouvers). That is a LOT harder. I am barely getting good at it after a month of practice or so. The problem is that playing this game is a lot like playing chess. There are moves, and counter moves and counter-counter moves. Now that I am finally getting the hang of it's incredible what kind of considerations I make while flying. As a Newbie I would just pull on the stick, spray and pray.

For Example: Now, I see the AI start a scissor and I think "should I follow or yo-yo high?" I know I can yo-yo high and I do it, the AI counters by trying to invert and extend lower. So I think "should I follow or extend and re-merge?". Depending on how I feel I either follow (my plane, Bf109 G-2, is a lot faster but turns like $hite) or I extend higher and get ready for another merge and so on ... there so many things you can do once you get in BCM it's a lot of fun just that.

THere is nothing more satisfying that getting a WELL deserved kill on a plane after a spectacular move and counter move battle. My battles last like 10-15 mintues against the AI and at the end I realize I had a white knuckled death-grip on my stick all the time.

If we ever get some regular servers going I can teach you some moves and some tricks I learned and that would shorten up your learning curve a lot. After that you will be addicted to flight sims forever (if you are not already :D )

in order to host or join IL2 games I didn't have to do anything special or more than what I usually do to run GR in multiplay.

Can you open specific ports on your firewall? How can you host GR through your firewall? IL2 doesn't work any different. In fact it reminds me more of how RS used to work... with it's own ugly looking chatroom and stuff, totally different than RVS...

Arrrgghhh! Still trying to get my plane to actually fly instead of rolling around on the runway or crashing into allied vehicles! Still trying to get my joystick to work properly too...I've memorized all of the flight commands, but can't seem to execute them properly in the game... <_<

heh.. problems taking off?

try and do the following:

1 - do not jack the throttle all the way to max all at once. do it gradually.

2 - once your plane is lined up on the runway make a note of your heading (left bottom of your screen). up until 50kmh you are blind cause your nose is pointing up. Just use the heading to make sure you are going straight.

3 - be VERY gentle with the controls. When your plane is going slow, any sudden movements will cause it to overreact and you will lose control.

4 - push the throttle gradually to 60-70% and leave it there until you plane has gained some speed (40-50), then increase power (always gradually) all the way to 100%. If you pack bombs you might have to use mil power... normally you don't need to.

5 - once you reach 50 kmh your tail will jump up. Resist the temptation to pull on the stick to gain altitude. Wait all the way until your plane has reached 170 kmh, then gently start pulling. As soon as your gear lifts from the ground, keep your joy fixed and pulled towards you. Don't pull more or less.

6 - retract your gear immediately, wait until you gained enough speed (180-200) then retract the flaps, all while keeping the joystick in the same position.

7 - as soon as you pass 250 you can start turning. Depending on what plane you have you might have to be careful until you get above 300. The airacobras (p39) can manouver decently at slow speed. So can the Yaks and La5. The germans and the Migs are a real pain and you should wait until you are above 300 before manouvering.

Don't worry. Taking off was my worst nightmare. Once you get it right, you won't forget and you won't have to think about it.

Worse comes to worse we can always practice online.. :)

I just started going through the campaign today ... very interesting and definetly gives you a feeling of immersion.

I have been used to fly the superpowered, supergunned 109 of the latest years (G-2, G-6/AS) and they are heavy, bad and mean.

If you fly the campaign you pretty much start flying at the beginning of the war (start of operation Barbarossa). You can choose the Russian or the German side. I chose German (of course) and found myself flying a 109 F-2 ... which is something of a different experience than a G2 or a G6. For one thing it's a lot more manouvreable, for another it looks ... light armored. And crappy.

For some reason these "early" crappy planes have a charm and style all of their own (besides being beautifully rendered).

So... let's start with the slideshow, shall we? :D

One morning we wake up and decide to invade Russia (well... what can I say ... it seemed like a good idea at the time  )

Nothing like flying early in the morning... beatiful sunrise, ain't it?
