Memorial Day

OK....listen in.....if this Memorial Day in the US is to remember the service men and women that have been killed, murdered or have died accidentally, then why is it such a huge celebratory weekend affair, and one of the US's biggest selling retail periods?

In the UK, and the rest of its Commonwealth, Rememberance Sunday is a very sombre occasion, that is represented and respected throughout on Rememberance Sunday, which is the 11th of November, or the Sunday nearest to that date. Uniforms, suits, smart dress and wreaths are what I associate that day with.......and not some corporate 'cash-in'.

Great.....it's great that banks, post offices, government organisations and [for the most part] large corporate organisations acknowledge this US national holiday.......but for retail it seems to be a way of making money off the people that are off today.

Now......for me......corporate America should either acknowledge, respect and accept its national holidays.......and let's face it......you don't get many........or....be made to donate to military charities on a national scale. I mean come on......"Woo hoo"......10% off if ya buy today!"

I dunno.....perhaps many people in the US are just glad of getting a paid day off from work.....but the 'grim face of capitalism' just waits around the corner.

IMO it's just very disrespectful. The former manager of the place I work at, was killed in Iraq whilst serving in the National Guard!

It's a bit late (I've been away over the weekend), but thanks to all those US Servicemen who have served over the years.

Just as an aside, do they mark 11th November in the US at all? I'm just sort of bemused as to why this seems to be seperate to the rest of the world's rememberance services? Or does the date have significance in US history?

Memorial Day is a day to honor the cost of our freedom by our beloved military AND those that continue that duty. IT IS supposed to be a day of honor not true celebration and many places treat the day with parades, memorial site dedictions and reading of the town's lost.

As to the Memorial weekend...I go by what an old irish american Vet told me once. "You want to honor me...do it with a pint in your hand."

So, I teach my sons to honor their deaths and sense of duty but also to celebrate their lives and their gift to us...freedom.

EDIT:

Sorry, the more I read the below post the more it bugged me. Commercialism is a fact of life in every country. It doesn't mean we have any less reverence for something. You say that Americans are intolerant and don't take the time to understand another culture or country. Well, that may be true but judging by the above posts, we are in good company. If you have a problem with the day, please, do it on another thread. That was one for those that want to honor the day not tear it apart.

 .......errrrrrr....did I?

You misread my post, I don't 'have a problem with the day', as I said government organisations, banks and large companies seem to acknowledge and recognise it as a national holiday, but it's retail that uses it as a day, and the weekend before it, to make more money. And the sad thing is, millions of people nationwide take advantage of the offers that the retail giants promote, and none of the retails ad's mentioned 'In HonoUr' of this or that, just "Hey....it's Memorial Day Weekend.....come on down!"

I hardly see that as tearing the day apart!

well, I will edited the "YOU say" to "they say" as I didn't mean the former. You are right, you didn't say it but I am saying that you show a lack of knowledge in a subject and then pass judgem......You know what.....I'm done with this....I am not going to continue this in a open thread that is meant to honor something and this bickering is beneath either of us. It seems there is a lack of understanding that is best solved in PM or on a teamspeak. I'll respect your opinion and let this lie.
