INTRODUCTION

One of the features I love more about Ghost Recon is the incredible sense of reality you can breath in all the missions and expansion packs. Pursuing the same objective more than 2 years ago AV Apollo released his Free Libya with an extended reality immersion factor. Let me anticipate that this tremendous sense of reality could disturb some players (let me say I?m one of this since I don?t like AV-Apollo choice to include real characters) but at the end remember that this is only a mod and what mod!

CONTENTS

Free Libya has been released soon after the availability of Desert Siege Expansion pack and uses all its features plus much more. I can say Free Libya was, at that time, the best total conversion available; look at the contents:

56 NEW weapons with spectacular sound effects.

8 NEW missions linked as a campaign

1 BONUS mission

Custom tigerstripe camo uniform for both desert and jungle maps (this second feature was added after the release of Island Thunder and was not initially available)

Two NEW multiplayer game types: Juggernaut and Command & Conquer.

NEW kit restrictions for online play: no projectile explosives, balanced kits, shotguns only, custom pistols only, no sensors

All single and multiplayer modes enabled for custom mission maps.

Spawn zones and bases relocated to counteract "spawn camping" in custom mission maps L01 to L08.

NEW mood music, sound effects, and pre-mission briefing voice-overs.

NEW specialists with signature weapons.

Featuring: DRAG's Black Sun Helicopters

Yes you read well: Helicopters! At this time it?s normal to include them in any mission since available through Island Thunder but at the time DRAG made a wonderful one and AV-Apollo simply borrowed it!

BACKGROUND AND CONCEPT

As said the realism factor is (almost) exaggerated.

Terrorist activity around the world shakes the foundations of civilization. A car bomb in France claims the lives of the Prime Minister and his wife. A suicide bomber in Israel demolishes a synagogue killing hundreds of worshippers. Guerilla attacks in Eritrea threaten to destabilize its government.

An extensive investigation which costs the U.S. intelligence community several agents' lives reveals the insidious nest of a terrorist network unprecedented in size and scope. The common thread holding them together controls one of the largest oil producing nations in the world. Colonel Muammar Ghadafi, absolute military dictator of Libya, seeks to become the figurehead of a world movement toward eliminating Western capitalism and democracy and replacing it with his Third International Theory. Since United Nation's sanctions were lifted in 1999, Ghadafi bided his time secretly building his network of terror. However, the rest of the world remains unconvinced of the Ghadafi's involvement citing the evidence as "circumstancial".

Seeing no other alternative, the President signs the Libyan Combat Zone Executive Order which reads, in part, "Pursuant to the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 112 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (26 U.S.C. 112), I designate, for purposes of that section, Libya, including the airspace above, as an area in which Armed Forces of the United States are and have been engaged in combat."

THE MISSIONS

As for Free Russia the mod follows RSE standard: there will be no surprise, such us objectives updates, in the mission (rather than Jack57?s missions) and therefore a very good briefing plan will help to successfully achieve the missions. Almost all the missions make good use of the DRAG helicopter (not insertion/extraction cinematics but in-game presence) and are set in all the 8 main maps of Desert Siege.

THE EXTRAS

This is a total conversion mod and the new weapons, camos, sounds, briefing voices fully testify it. More there are also 2 new multiplayer game types. I have never played them so I can?t give any opinions but I heard good things about them.

Here I like only to highlight the fact that after the release of the mod RSE made Island Thunder with its controversial patch 1.3 that made some problems to the original script. AV-Apollo hasn?t left us to our own but patched his mod including other new features: a new single mission and tiger camos for jungle environment (courtesy from Bajabravo).

BUGS

There are virtually no bugs in this conversion. Take care only that the version 1.4 of Free Libya needs patches 13./1.4

CONCLUSION

Free Libya was the only mod not reviewed in Don?t miss Campaign page at GR.net. In my opinion it?s one of the best total conversion out there but before to get upset with me read again the introduction.

Its realization was possible thanks to AV-Apollo and many other master modders like Bajabravo, DRAG, AV Sentinel and others.

FINAL SCORE: 9/10

FAN FEEDBACK

"This relatively new mod for GR set in conflict-ridden Libya adds weapons, player skins, and a new multiplayer "Command & Conquer" mode. Missions are well scripted, complete with pre-mission voice-overs and commandable specialists. Extra missions are in the complementing Free Russia! mod, which sports modern warfare fun." PC Gamer

?I also recommend "Postcards from Peru", "Free Libya" and "Saving Pilot Ryan". All excellent mods as well!? Necron99

?I have to say that the modding job that was done on the R98 was a very good job. This weapon is a great balance between knock down power vs recoil and zoom power of the scope.? Warhawk

And every single recommended mod list has Free Libya listed!

Why are you not allowed to use frags at the warehouse, in the refinery mission? If you use frags or GL, the mission fails, although there is no advisory in the briefing. What part of the script triggers this mission failure?

It's not a point of using frags also because igor language doesn't allow to check if frags have been used.

Mission can be declared failes in 2 ways:

1) not enough demos

2) more than 7 kills during mission

Almost surely with the frag you kill some enemies bringing the amount of total kill over 7 - that's why!

Not what I meant. After you set the demo charges at the refinery, when you go up to the warehouse, you can shoot as many enemy as you want, but, if you use frags or gl, you get mission failed. You get a message that it has alerted the Libyan army. Why? It must be something in ther script.

is Apollo still around sometimes??where did he go if not??

No, Apollo left the world of GR and move to other stuff :(

I think I found a possible problem in the script. It's very strange no one found this bug in 2 years. But I can't fix it since it's property of AV-Apollo and not patches can't be released without his approval.

Here I am! With a new Ghost Recon game on the way, it wouldn't have been hard to guess that I'd return. Maybe I'll even do some modding again. I haven't tried modding any other games because none of them compelled me like Ghost Recon: Jedi Academy, Rise of Nations, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Call of Duty, meh...

And thanks for the wonderful review, Giwex. You guys know that G-man did an Italian language translation of the mod right? Spectacular work, too.

Great mod, Apollo - many thanks!

But do you have any idea why the heli might appear - and then simply hover noisily and go nowhere - I think in missions 1, 3, and 4 (all I've played so far)?

I'm running a Mac, OS9.something (not OSX as mentioned on your site) with GR, DS and IT patched up to the max...

Grazie grazie

Yup - a fantastic mod !

With regard to the Frags/GL in the refinary mission, I had no problems with this as it occured to me that the use of such weapons in such an area could trigger off a chain reaction of explosions - not so good, eh ?

So, off course, the mission would fail in such a circumstance.

The last mission is a doozy!

I ended up simply taking 2 snipers & 1 support section (1 x M-60 + 1 x carb/at) in.

The snipers took care of the tangoes in the hill-top stronghold & the support section took out the 3rd Leaders' jeep/truck - all for less than 7 kills !

Oh yes indeed , a really good campaign/mod - thanks !!!!!

Greetings,

I've played Frostbite and now I want to try Free Libya. I did a clean install of GR, DS and patch 1.3-4. I ran the Free Libya installer successfully but the only campaigns I see are the original GR and DS. Did I do something wrong?  :stupid:

Sure there is something wrong. I guess Frostbite was the first mod you played. Well, FB has a self installer particularly clever that also activated the necessary mod.

For FL you have to go to your options screen, mod tabs, and activate DS and FL (with FL with higher priority meaning at the bottom of the list.

I hope I guessed right :)

Thanks, G-man! That did the trick. :D Looks like AV Apollo and Sentinel have done a superb job with FL. Pop them a salute from me and, having read the posts, I'll avoid using grenades at the refinery.

Now it's time to pack my rucksack and join the A-team downrange.
