RatoN
Yeah, i figured i would need a motherboard. I think what im going to do is just use it for a bit, and buy a whole new tower. Having to upgrade all that would be not a helluvalot cheaper than getting a new computer. Plus, then you also have a new computer! I would also need to add a dvd rom too, cause its only got a cd burner, so theres another upgrade Edit: Do you need the psu to be an exact wattage or can it be over? Would it fry anything if i got a psu that wasnt exact?? Also, what is a good amd mobo, one thats good for gaming, but wont blow a hole in my pocket. Im looking to run a 64 bit processor, cause those are good for running games (if im not mistaken??) ← Meh, DVD readers are 20$ so that’s not even worth talking about Just be warned that even if it’s a GF6600, you might need to upgrade for GRAW. Also, the parts to buy in the list constitute the most expensive parts. In other words, the fact that you purchase this comp for 300$ wont help you much in building a new performing rig, except for that 19 inch monitor. Ill look into it, and ill talk to the nerds at the computer store, and start with buying a case .

[TCS]BlackMamba
Go AMD mate and if you are strapped for cash why not check out ebay as long as you are VERY careful and only buy things from sellers with lots of feedback that sell computer parts all the time and the parts are new with with manufacturer ROA warranty you can save yourself a small fortune. Then you could splash out on a better graphics card for example. If you get AMD save money by getting an AMD 64 3700+ over an X2 3800+ for gaming. I don't think you will notice that much differance hence I am going to make that choice on my upgrade. That money will let me buy an x1800Xl instead of an x800 GTO a worthy swap I think! I would definatly go ATI they are slightly cheaper and IMHO they are up there with Nvidia. Motherboard wise go LANPARTY they are specifically designed for gaming. Even if you don't go LANPARTY make sure you get a good motherboard as this is after all what your whole PC is based on. You could also save money using your old case providing its got enough space and is ATX. RAM wise if you don't want to OC but still want decent timings go for GEIL. I did and I am very happy. Cheap aswell. I got mine off ebay. The guy sells them all the time and offers really quick delivery a classic example of the kind of ebay buyer to make purchases from. Look at his items for sale search for geil.
element11
I just bought a case. Its an antec case with 350 watt psu, 1 rear 120mm fan, and 2 80 mm fans, one in side, and one optional in front. This baby is gonna be nice and cool. I also got a mobo. The guy at the local shop reccomended this. Its the Biostar NF4ST-A9 AMD/939 with 3 pci, 1 agp, and 1 xgp slot. There are 4 RAM slots too. Later, in will go an Athalon 64 processor, and a Geforce 6800GT. I also plan to get 2 sticks of 1 gig Is the board good? I know none of you reccomended Biostar, but the guy at the shop said its good. If it isnt a good board, then i will take it back and get a better one. Edited February 15, 2006 by element11

RatoN
Looks good The only doubt is the makers of that board, Biostar??. From the looks and structure of their web site, it looks good, like their bios flash procedure is really cool. and the mobo is red, woooo oh, I just bought a case. Its an antec case with 350 watt psu, 1 rear 120mm fan, and 2 80 mm fans, one in side, and one optional in front. This baby is gonna be nice and cool. ... ← Dude, that is border line imo 420 watt is safer, espacially if you decide to go with a 7800 instead of a 6800 I would call that store and ask how much would it cost to change that case for a better one with a 420 watts PSU. Specter
Biostar has been around a good while, and while it isn't a DFI or other hyped up board, is should be a good one.
element11
Ok, thanks guys! Ill see if i can get a better case, or i might just buy a new psu.
element11
So I just got a fat paycheck this week, and im going to the store within the next couple days. Next, HDD and RAM. For the HDD, im going to get at least 200 gig, with over 7200 rpm. My board is a socket 939, so i need to get a 939 HD? Or does that matter? Any brand names to go for? With RAM, my board has 4 RAM slots. Im going to go for 2 gigs, so should i get 2 sticks of 1 gig? Any good brands i should buy? I dont thin my board supports 2 gig sticks... Should i go Single Side DDR or Double side DDR? Im also going to check out what other cases are around too, BTW, i also got a soundblaster audigy, and a LG DVD-RAM 8x

Or does that matter? Any brand names to go for? Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital... Newegg.com is your friend. It is hard to beat their prices. Although, if you're in Canada, you might have shipping difficulty. But you could use the site to research what is out there. With RAM, my board has 4 RAM slots. Im going to go for 2 gigs, so should i get 2 sticks of 1 gig? Any good brands i should buy? I dont thin my board supports 2 gig sticks... Should i go Single Side DDR or Double side DDR? Double Side. Get the 2 sticks of 1gb RAM. You 'puter will thank you for the headroom. Good Brands = OCZ, Corsair, Crucial, Patriot, Mushkin. --------------- As far as the case, personally, I would take it back and get one without a PSU. Then, buy an aftermarket PSU over 400 watts (500 recommended). Good Brands = Antec, Thermaltake, Cooler Master You're gonna need some power to run that 6800GT. --------------- For the motherboard you bought, look at the reviews... http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingRe...N82E16813138248 Good Brands = Asus, DFI, MSI, Abit, Gigabyte, etc. EDIT: These are just my recommendations of what I would do. You can take them for what they're worth to you. Your and anyone else's opinion may be different, and I can respect that. element11
Yeah, I looked trough newegg.com before, but they dont ship to canada as far as i know. Thank you for the post rossiski. Im going to get a new case, but im going to stick with the board. I know the guy who sold it to me a bit, i usually see him for parts, and he says its a real good board, theyve been carrying biostar for years, and he hasnt had any problems with it either. He even uses a biostar motherboard. Thanks for the reccomendations! This is going to be a helluva system!

I have never had issue with them. I used to use them.

Agp is better is it not? But how much better?? I mean, i dont wanna spend 500 bucks on a video card. ← Actually, while AGP is by no means bad, PCIe is becoming the new stadnard and will replace AGP within the next 2 years or so. And actually, you will be better off finding the 6800GT which comes in both AGP and PCIe, for the same money. It has 256 RAM, but it is DDR3, not DDR2 like on this card, and the GPU has 16 Pixel pipes, unlike this card which only has 12. The GT will be the better card for the same money, and it will be faster. If you have an option on your mobo where you can pick either AGP or PCIe, pick PCI-e, that way you know that video card will be fully transferrable to a new mobo if necessary, or even another machine. Papa6
I know my specs aren't the best around here, but for $849US, I didn't do too bad. as long as you know your parts, you can get away with alot. Since money WAS a serious issue, I made sure the parts i used were good. plus I spoke to the rep who's a gamer himself and found out that my mobo is an MSI too. Plus I'm running windows media edition on this. But if I could, I'd have gone for a custom made system from parts alone. element11
I just want to make sure http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814121192 This one is better?? And this would still run better than the other even though the other has 2x memory? I believe you, im just making sure, i dont want to get the wrong card. Many people seem to be having heatsink issues, but it seems easy to fix...
Papa6
yeah you CAN remove the stock heatsink from a graphicscard and put a custom one on. but a 6800 isn't the top o' the line but respectable, better than my 6200.. But you'll be gaming for awhile Added:If you use quality parts from trusted sources, you're in the green. but when you buy parts from unknown companies, you are taking chances. element11
Ok, but now i got a problem My monitor is not s video and does not fit those 2 output plugs. Also, some people have said the heatsinks have fallen off. Would a dab of superglue hurt anything? (I DO know enough not to do that with the cpu heatsink )
Specter
The video card will come with an adapter to change that connection to a regular monitor connection. Super Glue is a big no-no.
element11
Yeah i figured as much. What would be a way to put it back on if it did fall off? Is there a special clip? Or special glue?

(I DO know enough not to do that with the cpu heatsink ) ← The heatsink/fan should be screwed to the board. if you decide to change the heatsink/fan to a thermaltake one or another, purchase some artic silver paste for transferring the heat from the GPU to the heatsink setup. As for the dual DVI hookups, most graphiccard companies(not all) give you an adapter to plug your CRT to the card. example, I have an adapter(DVI) from my old MSI geforce 4200 card that will still work fine. so not to worry, if your card doesn't come with one, ask your local PC shop, they should be on the cheap and plentiful. look at the pic below for this adapter so you know what it looks like mate; ****Note these are two of the same adapters just turned so you can see the ends better -Papa6 Edited March 3, 2006 by Papa6
