I actually think we are on the verge of a "growth spurt" in computing technology...the 64 bit processors are coming out, we are seeing advances in leaps and bounds in all areas of the PC, including graphics cards, ram speed, etc. I think RSE is smart enough to realize that in order to guarantee a product that will be popular for a nice length of time they have to make a game that is challenging for today's technology, and perhaps even overdesign it so that in 12 months when we upgrade we will see things in GR2 we didn't see before, etc.
This is exactly what happened to me with GR...when it first came out, my PC would not play it at all. With each upgrade I made, as I could afford to make them (with a mortgage, 2 SUVs and a young child and a business...) I noticed marked improvements in the visual aspect of the game. Just my .02.
