Crimson
The simple fact is, what ever he changed made it so GR wont play anymore. If he changes his settings back and it still doesnt work, then theres some pretty cheap video cards out there that will fix the problem. Specter
That may be true guys. But the fact remains that it worked all this time, and it works on all his other apps, so why spend money when an unins/reinst of the game may fix it? ETMC, the opinions are in. The vid card may fix your game. One will cost money, one won't. It all comes down to your budget, and even if you get the new card, you may still have to unins/reinst the game. Just make sure that if you go the unins/reinst route or if you have to do it either way, do a complete uninst, clearing all registrry entries as well. OsM_Prodigy
thx for all the suggestions guys. sorry i didnt respond earlier, i was trying to fix the problem last night by probably uninstalling it and reinstalling it about 5 times and the options.xml didnt come back. i know you guys are saying that it generates after you get the game up, but GR wouldnt even get that far, it would quit when my arrow turned into an hour glass and there was a GR bar in my taskbar. but ive decided to do a reformat(i guess thats what its called). if that dont work, may just get a new comp, im not gonna pour money into a comp thats gonna keep ######in up like this. and my comp is outdated anyways(even though theres a sticker on the CPU that says NEVER OBSOLETE, lol, but thats because the company that made it will upgrade it for ya to the most recent model for 100 bucks, but i think that deal is already over). oh, and if it still helps, im runnin Winblows XP Pro. Specter
Go to Start, Run, and type in dxdiag. At the bottom, click the save info button, and it will generate the report for you. Then post it here. You said GR has been working for you in the past right? You only have 159 MB RAM, and I think for one thing, one stick may be going bad, as it is only reporting 159 MB. Im assuming your PC has two 64 MB sticks and a 32, or a 128 stick and a 32. Anyway, you are coming up a MB short. Also, just so you know, XP by itself requires on average with no tuning, 147 MB of RAM to run, thats if nothing else is. GR requires 47 MB. You can see where Im going with this. So what I am wondering here is this. Is the XP a recent upgrade? If so, is that about the time your GR stopped working? Because I think the issue is you are running out of RAM when starting the game. One thing you can try is this. Go to Start, Run, and type in msconfig and hit enter. Select the Startup Tab, and uncheck everything with a check mark next to it, and see if that will free up enough RAM for you to play. Let me know on my above questions. This isnt your video card. If it ran before, it should run now just fine. This says you only have 4MB video RAM though, and GR requires 16. You do definitely need to upgrade your card, but I dont think thats the main problem if GR worked before. How long did GR work for ya? But again, if it ran, it should run still. Also DXDIAG is reporting 158 MB RAM. This isnt right. Something fishy here. Also, your page file is way to small. XP typically requires 768 MB to run XP and apps. tecmic
Guten Morgen, Just read ET's DX diags!!! I don't mean to be rude but I find it hard to believe that GR could run without problems on a graphics card spec at that level. I could easily be wrong but I think yer got yer work cut out there, Phantom. M.
OsM_Prodigy
ok man, thx for your help. and no, XP isnt a recent upgrade, ive had it quite a while. id say that i got GR a few months after loading XP onto this comp. ill try what you suggested and see if it works. but im still gonna reformat, because im runnin looooooooooooooow on HD space. OsM_Prodigy
yeah, i know what you mean tecmic, it seems that my gfx card has been pullin off alot of miracles lately. and to phantom, GR has worked since i bought it. and im not sure whats wrong with XP, but its been crankin out probs after probs for me. Specter
One reason this grfx chip may be working is because you can go into the BIOS on some onboard machines and set aside upto 64 MB of system RAM to use for Video, although as a general rule, its no more than 32. Is this the case with your gfx chip?
OsM_Prodigy
naw man, cant say it is the case. dont quite remember doing anything like that. i just installed GR and it worked, simple as that.
Specter
I think your page file has shrunk too much due to running out of HDD space, and Ill bet your BIOS defaulted to sharing 16 MB or so of Sys RAM for your video and thats why it worked. You are going to have to free up about a GB of space to get things back on track I think. Id definitely consider the video upgrade and perhaps some additional RAM when the funds present themmselves. Otherwise, machine not bad and should do nicely.
tecmic
ET, I know what yer mean about XP. Although I wouldn't now go back to an earlier OS, XP Home has given me plenty to think about but overall, it does what I want it to do. Yer got to keep it patched but make sure yer understand what each patch does before installing it. They're not all beneficial!! I'm not trying to sell yer anything but I've always tried to keep up-to-date with ma graphics card and one of the big names. Although this means I can't always afford the latest it usually sees me through the next generation as the games producers can't roll out a new game everytime a new generation graphics card comes on the market. In fact I'm a generation behind now with ma GF4 TI 4400 but what's available that can make best use of the latest Radeon? An obvious tip, maybe? I part finance my next graphics card by selling the current one for around half price. A lot of guys are interested in upgrading from older technology for a much lower cost and I generally find a buyer. Same with with other components eg cpu, motherboard, sound card. Not so easy with on-board stuff!!! M.
dekela
Current Mode: 800 x 600 (24 bit) (60Hz) when i used this setting for my display using the same onboard graphics and a 566 p3 gr would not run. i had to set the display to 800x600 (16bit) worth a try maybe...... Display Memory: 4.0 MB my dx diag shows 4 meg of video memory aswell, but it apparently has up to 16m of "shared" memory, what ever that is Edited July 28, 2003 by dekela
Specter
Shared Memory is where in the BIOS, you can specify a portion of your System RAM be dedicated to your onboard Video card. Depending on BIOS, this can be up to 64MB. It's adjustable, so when you get a chance, take a look in your BIOS and see what the options are. That's why GR works fine on these onboard video chips. His resolution will need to go to 800x600 Dekela, just like you suggested. Anything higher will require more RAM than is set aside for his card. XP is an extreme system hog. His Page file is way to small. The best thing he could do right now, is get a 256MB stick of RAM and add to his machine. This would solve all issues just about, and is very cheap to do. Like 29.00 US i think.
dekela
thanx for the heads up on the shared memory phantm, i'll look at that when i get back on my machine. i agree with the ram idea, as soon as i can afford i'll be after more ram and a better graphics set up cheers...... OsM_Prodigy
i dont know, i just feel like getting a new machine. my comp right now only has a 10GB HD, and the ram can only go upto a max of 256. and when playing offline, i only get an average of 20 fps. i see how upgrades have their upsides, but they have a lot of downsides also, cuz when other games come out, ill just have to keep upgrading. you guys see what i mean? plus the comp has a lot of errors, like everytime i start the comp up, it comes up and says that System32.exe ran into an error. not sure if its been doing it recently, but ive seen it quite a bit. Specter
Well, are you thinking of buying pre-built, or building one, and what kind of budget are you working with? Building one is a good way to go, because then you know what's in it, and that it can be upgraded easily, and if this is your first attempt at it, I can walk you through it and the OS load very easily. If you buy pre-built, you'll want to get one you dont have to upgrade, but then you are looking at money. Give me a feeling for wants and budget, and what you want from the machine. OsM_Prodigy
oh, most likely prebuilt. saw some good ones at Best Buy. and budgets no problem for me, it dont come outta my pocket, i got parents. im only 15 years old after all, and i dont know if they sell comps for 50 bucks, cuz thats all i got on me right now. but its not like i would be the only one using a new comp. my whole family uses this POS that im using right now. Specter
So, do you want to get a really good performance machine that will last ya, or will it be a more moderate budget? What all does the machine get used for? Are you going to keep the other online for your parents and stuff?
OsM_Prodigy
more likely a good performance one. dont really do much besides go online and play games and whatnot. not sure ill still have this comp, but be likely to keep it around.
