Motherboard CD Boot Issues

Man, I'm got loads of problems here today. I finally realized today that it's probably that time again to wipe my computer and start from scratch. Ok, sounds fine. I made a list of everything I need and backed up all my stuff to my external hard drive. Pop in the Win XP cd and reboot... and it boots off the hard drive. I go into the BIOS and nowhere does it show ATAPI cd drives or any cd drives for that matter. I've got the latest BIOS firmware. Would the next step be to reset the jumpers and have the motherboard detect the hardware again? Thanks for the help. :)

Is there any chance, no matter how slim, that the IDE cable for the optical drive is loose or intermittent? Same deal with the IDE controller on the drive?

Do you have a different drive to swap out with? Anything in the motherboard manual about the CMOS and drive detection?
