Possible solution to the multiplayer server timeout while joining

Recommended Posts

I tried all of sort of things with my router as forwarding ports, using DMZ settings, deactivating windows firewall and nothing seemed to help. Every single time I tried to join an internet server, the session timed out after 4 or 5 minutes of waiting. It was frustating.

I tried a protocol analizer and no anomaly in the IP communications at OSI 3 layer. So I assumed the problem was in the upper layers, and specifically in the ICMP control protocol in UBI's network stack. Then I tried this:

1) Push the START buttom of windows task bar (XP in my case) open a DOS command window using RUN option of the start menu

2) typein CMD <enter>

3) A DOS windows should pop up, so type in it "ping -t gamespy.com" without the quotes. This probes the connection with gamespy in a constant fashion and this seems to do the trick as it keeps the GRAW 2 TCPIP connection on going and alive. DON'T CLOSE THIS WINDOWS WHILE PLAYING!

4) Now run GRAW 2 and you should enter to any server with a much more reliability.

It works for me like a charm in my specific configuration. Just one out of ten attemps failed to join, the other nine I was able to play withouth any trouble. I hope this could help you too.

If it works for you please post a reply to this message to spread the word

Enjoy and happy hunting!
