Rainbow Six: Siege has taken the gaming community by storm.
This is a franchise that has been around for years and years, but the latest release has taken the R6 franchise to the next level, unlike Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It’s drawn so much attention that major sportsbooks now handicap the matchups and offer odds. The title has over 60 million registered players. And between 2019 and 2020 there were more than a billion session days – Esports Observer Ranked Siege the 4th most impactful PC game of the year.
So how does it work?
It’s a five on five first-person shooter with five different game modes. However, in eSports competitions only three game modes are utilized: Secure Area, Hostage, and Bomb. The game is obviously centered around killing your enemies, but emphasis and points are awarded for teamwork and destruction of the environment (bomb). You can play as either the attacker or defender in these game modes with a vast array of characters available. Each has its own specific set of skills, weapons, and accessories.
Teams are generally 5v5 but certain tournaments may have different roster rules and it’s only allowed to substitute players before matches begin. So, once everyone is in the lobby, the team is set and roster changes are no longer allowed.

At the moment, Rainbow Six (R6) Siege is still one of the smaller market eSports. For comparison’s sake, let’s look at Pro Player earnings for a few other popular eSports through April of 2019.
- Dota 2 $177,665,705
- CS:GO $74,170,609
- LoL $64,778,534
- StarCraft II $29,961,361
- Rainbow Six Siege $7,029,886
These numbers represent the total amount of money awarded to players through April of 2019. So, as you can see, R6 doesn’t even pull in 5% of what Dota 2players rake in.

So, will R6 become as popular as CS:GO or other first-person shooters? Well, it really depends on you and the gaming community. If you advocate the game because you love it, you will help to increase its popularity. But we have to remember, games like CS: GO have had competitions for two decades now, so it is quite entrenched into the minds and hearts of gamers … even though it’s lacking compared to newer releases.
If R6 does overtake the big-dogs in popularity, it won’t be right now. It’s going to take time and plenty of advocating by fans such as yourself.
