Coming Soon 29 January 2003 Rocky

Stealth Recon 29 January 2003 Rocky
Alpha Squad's 2nd Annual Co-Op tournament kicks off on the 1st of February, and is dedicated to the memory of =SEALZ= Geordie.

There are some big hitters signed up, with over 13 squads at the last count, all looking forward to a competition played out in a spirit worthy of the cause. Make the community proud, and watch your backs - there is a special observer on the books, and I'm saying no more!

Scripting Tutorial 29 January 2003 Rocky
Thanks to Chavez of Alpha Squad we have added another Ghost Recon modding tutorial to our Modding Recon section.

This new scripting tutorial explains in simple terms how to end a mission when an objective can no longer be completed due to a condition such as losing demolition capability. Have fun with it!

Earl's Upgrade 27 January 2003 Rocky
Earl has released his latest weapons modification - Standard Upgrade. There is nothing standard about the mod though - it is top notch work, without a doubt; seventeen gorgeous weapon models, not to be missed.

You can download the mod from here right now. While it's downloading you can read details from Earl on how the mod progressed, and see some nice images in this forum thread. For a nice gallery of the weapons make sure you visit Earl's Baconbomb site.

SAS Updates 26 January 2003 Rocky
The 22ndSAS are working on an update for their popular SAS Equipment Modification featuring new weapons by Pyro Monty and amazing new vehicles by Elpatricio.

Visit this forum thread for full size images and check out the detail, very nice work. The finished mod will also have two new maps, and new missions - definately worth waiting for!

Frostbite 26 January 2003 Rocky
Frostbite is set for release in a few weeks, and features 3 brand new maps from Neutron, El Oso is scripting the missions, and Bajabravo is handling the new skins.

The maps are reminiscent of the old Rogue Spear Siberia maps, and one even includes a huge 5 level boat. The missions will take the form of a mini-campaign, crafted by El Oso.

As well as the new camo from Bajabravo, a new vehicle will make it's debut (see screenshot). There is alot more than mentioned here planned for the mod, check this thread for more details. Note that you will need both Desert Siege and Island Thunder to enjoy this mod.

McNabbs Missions 25 January 2003 Rocky

Memorial Mod 19 January 2003 Rocky
Many members of the community have already donated to the =SeALZ=Geordie fund after the tragic accident (see boxout on the right). Another way people can donate is to join in with a Community Mod that is being planned to pay respect to =SeALZ=Geordie. Some top name modders are leading this project, and they are looking to build a team committed to making a mod worthy of this cause.

If you would like to contribute, be it a mission script, a map, a skin, a weapon, wallpaper, splash screens - anything, mail me now with details on how you would like to help. Thanks.

Desert Stealth 18 January 2003 Rocky
Nightmare has released a clever skins mod called Desert Stealth Recon that kits 12 specialists in very effective camo. In order to use this mod you must have Island Thunder and Stealth Recon installed. Download here.

Check out some sceenshots and see just how effective this remarkable camo is, in this forum discussion.

Parachute 17 January 2003 Rocky
I still remember the first time I played a Rainbow Six mod that had the team parachute into a map, cool stuff. Now experienced Ghost Recon modder Biffa has gone and done it for Ghost Recon!

Biffa is working hard on a new campaign based on Operation Market Garden, one of the boldest plans of the second World War. The campaign contains 6 linked missions which are as accurate as possible to the actual events that took place in Holland 1944. Operation Market Garden requires War of Infamy and will be released around the same time as a new version of WOI around the end of this month.

Project X 17 January 2003 Rocky
Todays POTD image (down on the right) has aroused some interest in our forums. Following up on this interesting image leads us to modheads.net where the professional looking Project X is underway. A 20 mission Campaign with 15 brand new maps - this is a massive undertaking, make sure you give the team some encouragement!

Unreal Recon 16 January 2003 Rocky
The =MM= Clan have released their amazing Unreal Recon mod. As the title suggests, this adds Unreal characters and weapons to Ghost Recon, and they look great!

The mod includes 40 superb looking characters and new weapons for single and multi-player. New multiplayer game types included "Unreal Recon Team Play" which gives you 4 teams of 4 Mercs, Robots,Aliens,Egyptian and "Unreal Recon Mayhem" gives you all characters in all platoons.

The Interface has had a cool makeover and looks great too! Download this 20Mb mod here.

Mod Reviews 15 January 2003 Rocky
The recent hacker attack wiped out our mod reviews, but we are slowly rebuilding them from scratch.

Today I added Band of Brothers, and you can also find reviews for Postcards from Peru, One Shot One Kill, Operation Backlash and Bunkers in the Mods Review Forum.

If anyone happens to have any of our lost reviews stored somewhere, or has seen them on another site - please let me know!

Preacher's Maps 15 January 2003 Rocky
Here's a mod just in that offers alot for well under 1Mb. Preacher's Maps contains 69 retextured maps, and 17 new game types! Here's an example of one game type :

Preacher's Turf wars - is set up as a location and it is a whole spot thats marked on map u need to protect it from other player's for the longest time, A horn sounds when u own the Turf, A siren when u lose the Turf!

All maps are serverside only, so enjoy them online and each map has a mission too! Download this file here, and leave comment in our Mod forum here.

Mission Mods 15 January 2003 Rocky
If your looking for a couple of quick new missions to try out, download these mission mods received recently.

First up we have Mission Impossible, a 187Kb Firefight mission from franklingfx.

Then we have steel Fist and Jungle Cobra, both available in this 27Kb zip. Post feeback for either of these modders in our missions forum!

Parabellum 13 January 2003 Rocky
Sad news today as a Staff member here at GhostRecon.net has handed in his notice in order to concentrate on real life matters. Parabellum is one of the recognised names in the Ghost Recon community, and his help here and around the community will be sorely missed.

Parabellum was a busy member of the scene, active in the ground breaking Black Sun mod with the =DRAG= team, writing Weapons reports and he was recently working on a First Person Weapon mod for Ghost Recon, which you can see at his Tango-Down website.

I want to publically thank Parabellum for the work he carried out here with such professionalism, and around the community. If anyone has any comments they would like me to pass on to Para, let me know.

Genius Skins 13 January 2003 Rocky
One of the news items we lost due to the hacker attack was about ~NkOgNiTo~'s Genius Skins, which is a nice mod - so here are the details again. Check out the neat images in our forums here, check the readme file here, and visit the modder's website here! ~NkOgNiTo~ is considering a version 2.0, so if you have any comments, suggestions or requests let him know in our forums.

Playing Too Much? 13 January 2003 Rocky
There have been a few lists going around, poking gentle fun at those of us who take GR a little too seriously (is that even possible?!). This list from the guys at XRW is hilarious though, if this sounds like you - you had better check the other 63 out!

"you know more clan names than friends and family members names"

IGN Polls 12 January 2003 Rocky
Ghost Recon XBox is featuring in three IGN Polls right now, closing date for award nominations is the 14th. Vote for Ghost Recon in Best Sound, Best Graphics and Best Online game!

Italian Postcards 12 January 2003 Rocky
After discussing mod translations in this forum thread, Giwex has translated Jack's Postcard's From Peru Campaign into Italian! It's always worth giving this great campaign a mention, so if you haven't already downloaded it, grab either the English or Italian version from our review here.

Croatian Update 10 January 2003 Rocky
If you are enjoying the nicely detailed Croatian Army mod, grab this multiplayer patch that fixes the following issues..

  • Fixes support expert appearance bug- boonie hat is now visible
  • All in-game multiplayer kits are now replaced with selection of weapon kits from Croatian Army Mod- including weapons of Serbian paramilitary forces

Realism Mod 9 January 2003 Rocky
How much mod can you squeeze into around 5Mb? Quite alot if you take a look at the contents of Droopy's latest realism mod for Island Thunder. Some tweaks included to bring realism to the fore are

  • Player Classes are modified to bring a real class differentiation, no more complete a mission with a sniper killing 25 enemys
  • Snipers have limited ammo and hard to use weapons but can hit a coin size target at 100m.
  • Enemys are no longer olympic champions

Download the Enemy Realism Mod here, unzip with winrar or powerarchiver or my favourite - powerzip.

Downtown 9 January 2003 Rocky
Thanks to Whisper for pointing out a new Island Thunder map has quietly slipped out via NMM Gun Works. Although it doesn't mention Black Hawk Down anywhere, the resemblance is obvious, especially the rather cool heli insertion opening sequence.

There is one mission included in both single player and co-op flavours, but there is no mission briefing as it's a straight forward Firefight. You'll find the download for Dowtown at InsideG.

SAS Evolution 8 January 2003 Rocky
An ambitious new Total Conversion is in prepartion at SAS Evolution. When I say ambitious, I mean it, listen to what they have in mind...

"S.A.S Evolution is unlike other S.A.S games that are out at the moment as we are the first modification to lay the emphasis on the historical aspect of the worlds greatest special force.

The player will begin the game back in 1952 shortly after the formation of the 22nd S.A.S in the jungles of Malaya and work their way steadily up to the present day and beyond. Each and every major documented mission of the S.A.S will be playable in ultra-realistic detail, from the deserts of Oman through to the close quarter fighting during the Iranian embassy siege in London and onto the infamous role of the S.A.S during the Gulf war conflict."

For more details please visit this forum thread.

Hacked Off Part II ! 7 January 2003 Rocky
As we try and rebuild our site after a hacker attack devastated our server - another Ghost Recon website is hacked. This time the damage is defacement, not destruction (so far). Visit Locogamer and see for yourself.

Hacked Off 4 January 2003 Rocky
As many of you know by now, a devastating hacker attack on the server that GhostRecon.net is hosted on, put us offline for a few days.

I have the majority of the site back online, but there is alot of work ahead to get us back on our feet, so you may find some pages or images missing. The major setback is the forums, which were not recoverable. In a few days I hope to have new forums online, better than ever with improved functionality and speed.

Our trademark daily newspostings will resume shortly too, so bear with us as we recover from this setback.

Thanks to everyone who has mailed in best wishes, and for the offers of help. I have not had time to reply to them all, bear with me while I get this ship afloat again!

Until then, try modding your own face into Ghost Recon with our brand new Tutorial by Shot, or investigate the Ghost Recon damage model in this new report.

Congratulations to Jason, the winner of our All Seeing Eye Competition! Your registration code for a Lifetime License is already in the mail. Demo Stats Wednesday January 01 | Rocky
Daywanderer pointed me towards some interesting news at the Fileplanet's Demo Downloads page. As expected, Raven Shield and Splinter Cell are riding high in the chart, but who expected to see a year old game still hanging into the Top 20? That's right, Ghost Recon - over a year old and still a popular Demo download!

This confirms the position here at GhostRecon.net where our visitor statistics still number many thousand every day - infact we are just as busy as we ever were - long live Ghost Recon!

Check the full list here and try out a new game for the new year.
