IIRC, ping is the time it takes for you to send a packet accross the internet and recieve it back. So a lower ping is better. (Im positive about that.) The only realistic way of improving your ping involves upgrading your internet to broadband. (xDSL, Cable, or higher, if you can afford it.)

In simple terms, Ping tells you how fast you are connecting to another machine or server. As a general rule, anything under 150 is good. Anything over 300 is bad, and you need to try to reconnect or find another game.

The green or red bars next to players names are an indicator of this, yes. Green being good, red not so good.

To tell how fast you are connecting to a specific IP address, open a command window by going to Start, Run, and typing in cmd in Win2K or XP, and in 98 or ME, the word command.

This will open a command prompt window. In this window, type in ping, a space, then the IP addy you want to ping, and hit enter. It will give you the info you are looking for.
