dickie
Hi, I'm currently studying A Levels in the UK and am thinking of trying to get a commision in the Royal Marines after uni. I've read through most of what you guys have said - although not a lot seems to come from people in the UK forces - and have a few questions. Mainly what worries me is a comment someone made about Lt's being fairly useless, after reading somewhere else that US officers get 90 days training and then being told by my Royal Navy careers bloke that in the RM I'd have to complete 42 weeks basic training (inc. the all arms commando course) followed by around 12 months Advanced and Leadership training including a posting as a troop leader under supervision before I'd be left on my own as a qualified officer I was wondering if the same lack of faith in junior officers is the same within the UK forces? I'm also curious about how hard the commando course is, all the literature states it's meant to be incredibly hard so as to make it a true test of determination, and about completeing the final 30 mile march within 8 hours (7 for officers) on blisters from all the running and other things, I certainly don't expect it to be easy, which I think is a good thing as I really want to test myself, and see how far I can push myself, but I am curious as to what it actually involves. Also any information and advice on generally what to expect either from the Marines and the UK Forces in general. And as for whether I really want to do it, after meeting a few serving Marines, who seemed to be the most down to earth, confident and level headed people I've met, and reading and hearing about some of the things the've accomplished, I'd say a challenge like that is certainly what I'm looking for, and after reading a quote "No matter what the odds, a Royal Marine is always expected to achieve the impossible." makes me what to join them even more. Thanks
hero2zer0
Havent seen this question posted before; am currently in the Israeli Defence Force, job similliar to the us 45G one (Fire Control Repairer) and starting officer training in a week or so. Is it possible for someone like me to join the us army once im done with the IDF (mandatory 3 years) assuming i dont have a green card? tyovan4
Sorry mate, you need a green card to serve in the US forces. You might have luck with the Australian forces if you're keen to get out of Israel: http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/careers_expl...eaInfoBody.html
hero2zer0
Didnt say I wanted to leave Israel...was toying with the idea of joining the US army since they get to fight in a multitude of places around the globe. Oh and you actually get a real pay cheque
tyovan4
Ach, come on. I've heard about the enormous amount of money Israeli soldiers make
hero2zer0
Just a fun fact; My corresponding NCO who has been with the army for 25 years has a salary of approx. 3000 US$ / month. Even active infantry grunts here get only ~150 US$ / month.
cdnsniper
Okay I have a quick little question. I have horrible eyesight and I'll likely get laser-corrective surgery when I'm older. I'm just wondering what the eyesight requirement is for us Canadians looking into a career in the Army. ← Still waiting for an answer... WhiteKnight77
How old are you right now? The best place for an answer is with a recruiter. If you have several years yet, you may be able to get a waiver if they don't want someone with who has been operated on shortly before enlistment. cdnsniper
Well I'm 15 right now, and seeing a recruiter is unlikely with it being 2-3 hours away. But I plan on joining when I'm 19 and a half. If I get the surgery done when I'm 18 and a half, that would be enough time right to make sure I can get in?
WhiteKnight77
I couldn't answer that really. Again, a recruiter is the best person to ask.

WhiteKnight77
I went to PI. Nothing you do can prepare you for sand fleas. Seriously though, run, do sit ups and pull-ups (those are PFT tests). I only recommend running no more than a mile and a half for now, you will work up to 3 miles (daily run) while in boot camp. Jumping jacks, bends and thrusts, push ups and maybe leg lifts are some other exercises you could do.
Thor
I have to say... I've seen alot of stuff, on alot of boards, about people interested in joining the military... But I have NEVER seen a board full of members actually willing to HELP the younger members with their decisions, and the pre-bootcamp training before! BRAVO GR Peeps! Now, I'm really glad I joined here! Myself.. I'm a Navy Vet.. done SOCOM and sea life.. both sides, various platforms.. if anyone wants Navy Information, let me know, and I'll help out as best as I can. I didn't notice anyone else with Navy info from first hand experience, so I'll throw my hat out there if anyone's interested. spearhead
im 17 and im seriously considering joining the royal navy (despite the fact ive always wanted to be in IT support), im gonna go to uni first n study for a Beng hons degree in computer software and hardware engineering then go to BRNC to become a logistics officer, but im not sure if i can do an engineering course and become an officer for logistics? navy has failed to get back to me on that one so does anyone know? i would go for an information systems officer, but they hardly ever serve on ships n play a very minor role by the looks of it

It's never polite to assume, but if that's what your talking about, I'll see if any of my UK contacts have any information for you, or if there's someone here, it may help them help you better. spearhead
would u prefer to join an armed force as a low rank and work ur way up or apply to be an officer after going to uni? thing is, i wanna be in IT, but im seriously considering joining the royal navy. but i dont wanna sign away my life, sign away the career i wanted, if all im gonna be is a low rank trying to spend half my life working my way up to where i cud be if i applied to be an officer. only problem is, u have more respect if you worked ur way up through the ranks, but as far as im concerned, theres no point being in the navy if u cant be an officer, my mind is questioning itself over that one any thoughts? Dan
well personally if i was going to join the ADF i would be an officer rather then just enlist. 1. More money 2. Itll mean i have a uni degree i could use when i got out, i wouldnt have to worry trying to study as mature age or something I thought long and hard about the ADF, but ive ended up not doing it. I alos thought about the whole 'officers dont earn their pay crap' and got over it very quickly. So if i was you, i would go down the uni/officer road.
