the.ronin Posted January 25, 2003 Share Posted January 25, 2003 there was a huge vacuum of good kill-em-all type flicks since 9/11 - rightfully so. but my complaint is that the ones that did manage to seep through since then have sorta sucked. theres collateral deuce - because we all know terrorists wear pin-stripe suits. hart's gay war - bunch of men, prison, one thing blows up. we were soldiers was real cool that mighta been the exception. spy games wasnt too shabby either. anyway theres the recruit and gotta watch that just for the sweet laser citing scenes and the "pick up 5 chicks at the bar" scene. but theres a new one comin out with bruce willis called "tears of the sun" and that looks pretty sweet. The Bourne Identity is something you guys should really look into. it came out on video in canada last week. You'll probably have it in the states too. its an awsome movie. Looking forward to Cradle to the Grave with Jet Li and Mark Dacascos and Kill Bill with Uma Thurman as some kinda saumurai ######-kicking chick. If you don't know who M. That one was a pretty good film. I haven't seen this new one. I say they should film some of Forsythe's books. I've only known of two: The Day of the Jackal and The Fourth Protocol. Both great films. [manly voice] vin diesel [/manly voice] is GAY. also, whats the deal with bringing in video games into war movies?! spy game's "where'd you learn to shoot son?" "the boy scouts" was o.k. but when you got [manly voice] vin diesel [/manly voice] claiming to learning to snipe from "first person shooters" and cia agents crediting "nintendo" -- man, i dunno bout that. great comment velocity, these guys should think *franchise opportunity.* these video games have enough hollywood material as they stand, they could all reasonably be turned into some sort of full motion picture -- flooding with royalties. sure they may not be the next casablanca but when you got garbage like [manly voice] XXX [/manly voice] and "ecks versus sever" out there ... thats gotta say something. I've read most of Tom Clancy's stuff and Rainbow 6 is NOT very good at all. come to think of it... none of his recent books have been very good. his books are like porno for the military buff. you get all the details, but not much plot. Right now i'm reading Parachute Infantry by David Webster. Webster was in the 101st during WW2 and the book is his memoirs from Normandy to D-Day. think Band of Brothers in book form. its pretty good... sort of like a history book, but written from the first person. another good one was Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. the book is 100 times better then the movie. there's actually quite a bit of depth to it. Perhaps the best novel written in the twentieth century...It was actually very controversial due to the political statements made within, but now, over 40 years later, one can only call it prophetic... Off, but close to, the military topic, I heartily suggest Homicide: A Year In The Killing Streets by David Simon...It was the non-fiction book that inspired the fictional television series...A fascinating read... I totally agree... its on the recommended reading list for the CF infantry school. the funny thing is Heinlein was a Navy man, but he tells it like a grunt. Another good one is Stranger in a Strange Land, also by Heinlein. the story is about a guy who is a human in the genetic sense, but he was raised on Mars with martian values. he becomes a prophet, then a martyr... similar to the Jesus story. the story is a metaphor for tolerance of others and explains why there is no good and evil and why everything is relative and must be taken in context. Oh Fusaki, we really have to debate the "good vs evil" thing...I'd love to get your viewpoint as you're younger and from a different, but fairly similar nation...However, like I said in that other post, come to work with me for a week and I guarntee you'll believe there are out and out evil folks in the world...As Kaiser Sozay said, "The greatest trick the Devil ever played was making the world believe he didn't exist..." Another, pretty decent book by Heinlein is "Revolt in 2100"... Kinda Sci-fi, but the Dorsai books, specifically "Dorsai" and "Soldier, Ask Not" by Gordon R.
