hartog 0
hey guys. with the invention of Shivers Tree tut, there has been a pop up of tree making questions, which is great. I have had alot of my questions answered by just reading along with everyone elses problems. but now i have one of my own. I was following the thread that Dr. J and others helped with the "scatter" tool, over on "the Platoon" fourm on the platoon. I have never used the tool and it look great so i set up everything according to Dr. J. to make it scale and rotate. then i selected my ground as the emitter. and clicked on "Paint" and tried to place the trees, and nothing happened. i tried Apply and nothing. I am sure i am missing an easy step. I just can't make the tool put more trees out there.? Can some one please point out the obvious to me? Hartog
Zeko 33
Did u select your tree as scatter object?
hartog 0
Yep, i selected the tree, and then set all of the things to scale it and rotate it. then i choose the "emitter thing" as the ground "_1" then i clicked on "paint" as recommended and nothing would happen in top view when i clicked. then after a few random clicks i hit apply and nothing. i tried to see if they were hidden and the were not. nothing happened. thanks in advance. hartog
Zeko 33
Looks like u tried to place them on group _1. Ungroup it and select your terrain/ground only.

Zeko 33
Looks everything ok to me. One question tho...Do u have tree selected under "Object properties" like the picture shows where the arrow is pointed?
cobaka 0
I don't have max in front of me, so this is off the top of my head. It looks like you have the scatter object and emitter object set up right (their names should appear in the respective boxes). When I add trees, I use the Paint to manually place the trees. I believe apply randomly scatters 100 objects (whatever object count is). I use the top view, and set the view to surfaces (or something like that) NOT wireframe. Paint doesn't seem to work on the wireframe view. P.S. Scatter will work when the ground is still grouped. Just make sure you paint on the ground otherwise you will have trees on roof tops! One hazard of this I've found, is if there are surfaces over one another, like a water plane over a riverbed plane, or a bit of a rock object under your ground surface, the scatter tool isn't sure which plane you are trying to put the tree on (scatter will work with any object, not just trees), so it seems to teleport the tree to some odd place you don't want it.
