Silent Hunter 2/Destroyer Command

Tonight I had my first go on-line with DC/SH2 and it was kind of tense. It was myself and one other in U-Boats and one guy in a DD. The other U-Boat captain grouded himself in a crash dive and I hit the DD with a dud on my first salvo of 2 torpedos. I fired the remaining 3 torps individually and missed each time, but only by yards really.

The other U-Boat was being pounded by depth charges while I wsa trying to make a break for the objective. When I got far enough away I surfaced to use my deck gun due to the fact I still had 10 minutes on finishing reloading tube no.1. I hit the destroyer a few times and came under return fire and had to resubmerge after taking some damage, but my efforts to draw the DD off the other guy worked.

Though the server crashed (I wasn't hosting BTW), it was a good first time playing this on-line and can be as tense as GR or RS. :rocky:

NC, I guess you haven't looked at the Picture Thread have you? The very first pics I posted in there are from SH2. :o

Actually it isn't that hard once you figure out the aiming of the torps. I keep it set to automatically find the solution to program them and then it's just of matter of firing them at the right time. I finally think I figured out the spread deal.

I am picky about what games I play. IMO SH2 and DC are an RTS and FPS all in one. GR depends on strategy to accomplish the mission; same with trying to destroy a ship be it merchant or naval. The naval targets are even harder to sink as they move and turn faster to change course and can shoot back at you. Some merchants are armed and can inflict some damage if you aren't careful.

I've seen these games before and have always thought of picking up sh2. How's that U-boat controls WK? Are they complicated? Or as captain do you just give commands and your crew do the job for you?

How about if you play as a destroyer? Is it hard to hunt a U-Boat?

Now that I've seen these pictures and WK's account of the battle, I think I'm picking it up.

ARRR!!! Yo ho ho! And a bottle of rum!!

Out.

You control everything. You plot courses on a plot map, set speeds (and time compression values,) whether surfaced or submerged, periscope up or down and you press the buttons to send the torpedos on the way. There are control panels on each side of the monitor that you can drag out with your mouse and pin into place to help comand your boat. You can even watch your torpedo make it's run to the target from a chase view. You can see examples on the screenshot page I posted.

I still haven't done much with DC yet, but will try soon I guess. For the price of the game(s) (I spent $30 for both, but you prolly can get both at CompUsa for $20) I am having fun. It really is a change of pace.

Sorry Knight guess I didn't remember them, oh well thanks for the new ones.

edit: No wonder I didn't remember they were the very first pics on the thread.

Projekt Messerwetzer Silent Hunter II/Destroyer Command DirectPlay Conversion and Multiplayer Upgrade was done using the source code with Ubi's blessing. UbiSoft gave some adventurous soles the sorce code for free and worked out some bugs in the games and even upped the number of players on a server.

Who keeps saying that Ubi doesn't care? If you have either SH2 or DC grab it and install after you install the interop patches from Ubi that are also available on the same page.

I've enjoyed such games for some time now. Jane's (when they produced good computer products) made 688 Hunter/Killer, a game about Los Angeles class attack boats. It was way too complicated for me, which I why i love WWII era stuff (like IL2 and CFS II).

Also, weren't Tom Clancy and Larry Bond supposed to come up with an updated version of Harpoon, the "game" that inspired Red Storm Rising and was/is still used by the Pentagon?

I got Tom Clancy SSN, but that is a win95 game and won't run on this PC (win2k.) Some of the other games you are talking about are also Win95 games. I have been thinking of getting Sub Command which is along the lines of 688. Now there is a new U-Boat sim coming out called Enigma and from what I see the graphics look killer. I have the retail demo and am gonna try it out.
