Dick Splash 23
I understand I could buy say, a 120GB Seagate for example, and just install it. The PC would then designate it a drive letter! If after I've done this can I transfer everything on my C drive to it, and then remove the C drive? If I can do that, will the new drive be designated C? DS

Stinger 0
1. Yes windows will designate it and u just have to hook it up to the primary channel slave cable. 2.Yes 3.You can rename drives to any letter u choose so yes.
Specter 0
keep in mind that Windows will get screwed up if you try to xfer windows to the new drive, as Windows will be using files when it moves itself. The best way to do it is make a ghost image of your C drive, and ghost the new drive. Then delete the Windows directory from the old drive.
warhawk 0
Ah yes good old ghost. Something else to consider, when I got my new Maxtor 40 gig drive it came with some software to transfer everything for me. Unfortunately for me I didn't need it at the time as I was going to restructure my drive differently then what it was before. Check to see if your new drive, when you get one, comes with this before hand. Stout Hearts Warhawk
Stinger 0
Yeah as phantom said u will need to make an image of the HDD. I personally reccommend Drive Image 7 or 2002 by the fine folks ar Partition Magic.
Specter 0
I also prefer Drive Image, but most folks have Ghost included with Norton Utilities, that's why I mentioned that instead of Drive Image.

Yeah, Ghost is way more common but first and only time I used it it trashed my NTLDR and NTDETECT files and I didnt at the time know how to replace them so I ended up formatting

There are command line switches you can use to take care of this problem. Stout Hearts Warhawk
Stinger 0
I used the version that came with my external HDD. It was standalone not with Norton Utils or sysworks. It was pretty new at least I thought. That hdd is like 6 months old maybe. I know how to fix it now if it happened but I wouldn't choose to use it if it meant I had to do so. Specter 0
Thats true, but most people will elect not to spend an extra 40 or 50 bucks on a program when the already have the Norton program. That being said, I have never had trouble with Ghost, even the older ones, I just prefer Drive Image, because I have used it more. I have always used Power Quest products. They are Top Shelf. Most of the problems I ran into with the older versions of Ghost was the fact that it didn't know what to do with the NTFS file system. As a result when an NT machine was rebooted with the new drive with the ghosted image it always ran chkdsk thinking that there was a problem with the new drive when there wasn't. But like I said there was a simple solution to it. Stout Hearts Warhawk

ghost gamer 0
@SOTOphantm and Stinger....thanks for setting me straight ...its all this weed I am smoking ..kidding ... Before I replaced my hard drive, I had several people tell me to be sure not to get the old/new drives mixed up...and that if I did I would in affect erase the existing data on the old drive...oh well....Now I know!!! ghost gamer 0
@SOTOphantm...weird...just curious...you mentioned you tried the drive in another pc and it showed up fine....was that OS also XP?...when I put my new drive in, I could not run defrag or scandisk...it kept saying that a disk utlility was running...there was nothing running in the background...then a couple days later, actually after I put in a new fan on the power supply, I tried to run defrag for laughs..and it worked as did scandisk (I run ME by the way).......weird... Things that work one day and then don't the next are the worst kind of problems...
Specter 0
Yes, the OS in the other PC was also XP Pro. But my problem was different from yours in that XP wouldnt see my drive at all on my machine.
