Depreciation of Notebooks

Recommended Posts

Last March or so I bought a notebook, not the one I wanted but the best available for two grand. 2.8gig desktop P4, half gig of ram, but only a Radeon graphics processor. With the exception of the graphics processor, it's a bitchin' computer. While it crunches numbers like a beast, I get about 9-12 fps in games (Curse you NightCrawler!!).

I'm giving serious thought to selling it once I get it paid off, and purchasing this. I'm entirely sold on laptops, as you can't haul a desktop into a lecture hall.

Does anyone have any ballpark figures for the depreciation of notebooks, or some direction to point me in? While I'd like to get my laptop off of my hands as quickly as possible, I'd like to lose as little money as possible.

Ur notebook is really nice man. IMO the only gfx worth getting for gaming on a laptop are the 9000 Mobility being upgraded soon I think...) or the FX5600 GO model. You look at any of these?

Edit-When I get my new rig up and runnin I am gonna start folding again and maybe Rocky will actually put it on the news page again :P

Eh.. anyone wanna notebook? my figures come to $1649. Better deal than you're gonna get at a store.

The mobility 9k is the cheapest 8.1dx compatible. the 9100 and 9200 are both 8.1 compatible and the 9600 is dx9. Only problem is they only running in Eurocom and VoodooPC notebooks.

Alienware - More money for the same thing, including a screen that's an inch smaller?. :nono:

Good luck with the sale. I havent seen anyone sell a notebook used and get more than between 1/3 and 1/2 what they paid for it. Trouble is they are mobile, and really not easy to upgrade.

But that has been MY experience, NOT everyone's.

My view on laptops is that they cost an arm and a leg, lose a tremendous amount of their value within 2 years, and are basically not upgrade friendly. A desktop is superior in every regard but portability, which I don't need. I only took mine to class a few times before I decided I'd rather just take the pen & paper.

Basically, I just personally don't need one for work and they are no good to me for any other reason. I've owned three in all and I doubt I'll buy another one ever unless I need it for work.

No, no arguements here I will keep it from that. Crimson, be my guest to start an Intel vs. AMD price thread. I'll be there aas soon as I can.

Its hard to buy a computer and just use it for note taking or school work. Maybe the lecture was stupid or something u had already heard or u take the laptop to a family renunion and get bored...maybe u play a little bit of the sims or simcity (I don't realy like maxis but hey) u may wanna play some games.

Also along the lines of compatibility u can't use word, pp, excel etc. and such which I am sure most of us here are used to. And yes games....I imagine XO, u did do some gaming am I right? With a machine that powerful it would be crazy to waste it on note taking alone thus going back to my earlier point.

Edit on MS Office, apparently there is/are app/s that can open and edit MS word documents and the like in AppleWorksâ„¢ I don't have a price figure nor do I know if they actually cost money or not.

Why not this?

Cause the University network (apparently) isn't compatible with Apples.

Only gaming will be at home. Running anything beyond Office chews through the battery too fast. I'm not dropping another 100 bucks on another battery if I can help it. Hauling an AC adaptor and mouse to class is too big of a pain in the ass.

If you guys decide to carry the argument further, I'll delete the thread and start over. :nono:

Dude u should get dell. They have some good laptops and the best customer service. U dont really need anything even have as powerful as ur previous laptop if all u will be doing is working with Office. Save yourself some $ and get a couple games to play at home or a mini fridge. But I imagine u will have a hard time selling a notebook that nice. P.S. That arguement already died

Greetings!

I use a laptop for my jobs and for gaming also, and I must say that after 1 year the technology has made my puter obsolete for gaming with all the new cards that are out.

Resale of these things is absurd, since what it costs to buy the better models new, is not outweighed by the low price of an older used machine. I say this because prior to buying my current laptop, I looked for used ones, some at $900, and with P4 out the PIII's were too obsolete. The same way I balked at the used laptops, is the same reason another buyer will have a problem shelling out any serious coin for my year old machine. Because 4GHZ chips will be in all laptops soon, I would wait before purchasing another laptop right now.

4GHz is still a year or so away (not including OCing). But Laptops are a hard to sell thing. They have but one selling point and that is mobility. With so many other laptops available and them not being promarily used for gaming the market is for laptops that can do Office and other such apps. XO, ur machine is so much overkill for that it ain't funny. And people are only gonna pay what they have to being cheap and all and since they dont need a laptop that pricey/powerful to do those apps then they aren't gonna give u the money it's worth even though it is used. I don't mean to say u wont but it will be hard to sell it for the price it deserves.

The exhorbitant prices for outdated notebooks is one of the reasons I'd like to sell the notebook I've got, and get the one I want.

Because 4GHZ chips will be in all laptops soon, I would wait before purchasing another laptop right now

And when the 4GHZ chips are in laptops, the 6GHZ will be on the horizon. It's the same waiting game that's played with desktops, but at higher stakes. It's a damn sight harder to upgrade a notebook processor than it is a desktop.

I almost got one but it' like $1,000 for a 1GHz Athlon, 20GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD, 15.1TFT and just other basic stuffs. So costly for so little.
