Lost in the Mod Sea.....

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I bit the bullet and decided to do a mod (small weapons type) of an existing mod. I didnt like the kit combos and thought....hell how hard can this be..........2 weeks later here I am adrift in the Modding Sea :stupid:

Kit files I understand. Gun files I understand and can work with. Kit Icons...yep figured that out also (with help from 151 Lancer, an old teammate). The RSB image thing....got it with a lot of trial and error.

So here I am all happy with my new kit combos. I fire up GR...load my mod and....well there is my rifleman, in his BDU's and....wait....why is he playing an "Air" Rifle? Yep he is standing there with nothing but air in his hands. Damn. After talking to Lancer again he figured out my problem was the ATR files. I said huh? He told me how/why to fix the error but me being dense headed it promptly went in my ears, bounced around a little and fell into the black hole. OK, I went to look at any tutorials out there. Most are broken links or deal mainly with 3Dmax (which I really dont want to learn/buy. AutoCad, my RL job, is hard enough to keep up to date with. Also I dont have 3 large burning a hole in my checkbook for it).

I opened up some other mods I have D/L'd to see how they did things. This led to further confusion. Each modder does things different so a no0b such as me cant make heads or tails out of their file structure (maybe by design?).

So as an experiment I took Argyills SOF and droped it into the Navy SEALs mod to see what happens (yes I was using copies of each lest my experiment went horribliy wrong). Well, I see that the human models are there, and the BDU's are there and correct, but all the dudes have white heads and SOF's cool helmets are all white also. Oh and the Demo guy came in with no skin just the white model, looked like the Stay Puft guy that needs to loose some poundage. Which leads me to a question.....why do the demo and HW guys look like "Blimpy"? Pics I see from Iraq show SAW gunners in the same kits as the riflemen. I eman this is combat not EOD operations right?

OK, so in the end here is where I am lost. I dont understand the file tree for the atr chr and how they relate to the kit and gun files. Whats the Hero forlder for? Single player? (this game has a single player mode?) Why are there separate folders for riflemen and mp riflemen? Can someone, somewhere, lay out a atr file for idiots like me? Walk me thru all the parts and show me what connects to what?

Thanks in advance..................

The white usually indicates missing textures!

If you do not have DS then some of the SOF guys will have white faces, this is because I used some of the DS textures for them, the easiest remedy for this is to open up the atr file and where it says .........head.rsb,change it to one of the Russian head from the original missions folder!

Also you must make sure that you copied over the desert.rsbs that correspond to the chr model!

Are you saying there is no weapon in there hands? Please try to help us help you. I can imagine what in the ATR files would cause this. Its much more likly to be that youve done something wrong woth the kits, but that usually crashes the game. Tell me more!

Thanks for the replys.

I have/had DS and IT running also. Again I was just experimenting to see what happens and what is missing (sort of a trial and error reverse engineering thing). I read thru that IGOR for dummies thing again and re-read the ATR section. I also have BjB's ATR generator but after seeing it I'm not sure how to really use it. Also do you have to have different Hero and MP folders? This is the main problem I seem to be having is what to put either of those. Same with the kits. Why are there kit folders for Hero, MP and Rifleman, Demo, HV, Sniper. Some even add more folders in there. I makes it even harder to customize the kits for your flavors (which is really all I wanted to do) instead of 120 sniper kits etc. The SOF trial run was to see how the ATR's related to the kits. Maybe I am makign this too hard. I dont know.

As to the troopers with "Air" weapons. The trooper is skined and all there....he just has nothing in his hands, no white gun, no kit icon, nothing. I even droped into a game and had no reticle, no weapon etc...

This is what lead me to the ATR's......I guess I should ask what is the easiest way to take the Gun files and all the stuff linked to them, make new kits, all from the target mod and make them into a smaller less cumbersome mod of my own (giving the fullest credit to the original mod maker of course, dont want to seem like I am doing any thing original here.....just tweeking)

If your guy has no weapon it maybe because you have entered the incorrect kit path. Like Argyll said, a simple typo. :)

You're right that it could be a simple typo, but it is not necessarily in the kit path. It could be in the kit file itself or in the gun file. Makes it really fun to track down.

Normally if youve got incorrect gun files or kits GR will crash, then check your IKE and its easily fixed. I like to call this way If at first you crash, crash, crash and crash again. You will finally get umm all!

"If at first you crash, crash, crash and crash again." Nice one.

Rereading Buffalo-6's most recent post, "This is what lead me to the ATR's......I guess I should ask what is the easiest way to take the Gun files and all the stuff linked to them, make new kits, all from the target mod and make them into a smaller less cumbersome mod of my own (giving the fullest credit to the original mod maker of course, dont want to seem like I am doing any thing original here.....just tweeking) " Keep it simple.

Put all textures, except reticles (which go in a shell/art) and kits(which go in a shell/art/kits) in a folder called textures, all models in a folder called model, all gun files in a folder called equip. Put any kits that you want your riflemen to have in kits/riflemen. Do the same kind of the thing for the other classes. Unless your mod has specialists, you don't need to worry about the hero folder, if it does make a folder for each specialist in the hero folder and make that folder the kit path for the specialist. Not sure about the MP folders.

If you have the right kit paths in the actor file and you don't have any other typos, what I told you should make everything work.
