Fehyd
I am in the process of creating a dedicated FTP site to be used as an alternate d/l location for GR mods. My question is this.. Do I need permission from the Mod creator(s) to host their mods on my site? I dont want to break any unwritten rules or anything.. Basically, if you have created a mod, let me know if it's ok for me to host it. Thanks Fehyd
SIX
I don't know the "unwritten" or written rules, but my hat goes off to you! I cannot stand FilePlanet and am getting very weary of dead links! When you get it online, please let me know and I will definitly put a link up on ghostrecon.org! Thanks a ton!
GRIN_Wolfsong
You don't need permission to put up the mods for download. It's only if you want to use parts of them, or change things in them that it's an unwritten rule of respect for other peoples work to ask for permission. I think all modders will just be happy that there is another place that their mods can be found and downloaded from.
Rocky
The only permission you are going to need is from your ISP for blowing up their server! Seriously though - good luck, let us now how you get on.
SOTOMac
Heres a suggestion for Your Mod Server's URL - Fehyd... Fehyd's Armory @ www.fehyd2black.com Regards,
Fehyd
I was just going to set up an FTP... a direct link to my comp. You will be needing an FTP client softare (like WS FTP, or flashFXP) I will also be providing a program for download if needed. I'm not using my ISP allotted webspace, as roadrunner only gives me 5 megs, but I will be using that to offer the FTP client. When logging into the FTP, you will just log directly into my IP. I can title my FTP server, but the address will be my IP. No URL or anything. Perhaps some time in the future, I will actually spend money on getting a site. As a test run, I have my FTP site up and active. Limit, 2 people at a time. and you can get flashFXP (my favorite) here: http://home.rochester.rr.com/fehyd/FlashFX...FXP_2_Setup.exe Here's the FTP info: IP: 66.66.163.197 Port: 27015 log in: ghost password: recon I only have a few mods in it right now, I wanted to make sure it worked before I fill up my hardrive. Please let me know if this works Fehyd
Kiff
Cool. Good job, Fehyd. One thing I've been wondering about. Is your name from Dune?
Fehyd
yep, a little change in spelling, but yes, it's from Dune. My internet, MUD, D&D..etc nickname for about 15 years now has been Fehyd. Basically, if you ever see a Fehyd around, 99% of the time, it's me. firefly2442
You could put utilities and tutorials for modding on the site too. That'd be kinda cool.
Stinger
How are you gonna host 5GB of mods and still expect to 1. Keep your ISP 2. Stll have Bandwidth left and 3. Your a lot more open to hackers and way you put it. I don't get it.
Super-Bob
Do you realize your bandwith remaining for you will be 0 when people are downloading, I think you're getting the short end of the stick.
Fehyd
I'm not sure what you guys are talking about... I have been running an FTP site for a few years now.. I run it 24/7. I checked my log, and during the game I hosted this evening/night/morning I had sent out roughly 80 mb. I had a few people in my FTP server, as well as 10+ people in my game, along with hosting teamspeak... ICQ was still running, as was my email program. I had about a total of 1 minute of a player reporting lag.. Am I missing something here? The GR FTP server that I will be running (was in test phase tonight, and had 3 people grab mods off it while my game server was running, along with 2 other users in my main FTP site) will have a limit of 2 people logged in at a time. It's not like I'm going to set it up with unlimited connections or anything.. Through the course of this evening, at no point did I have less than 2 people downloading something at any given time. The max number of people I had at once this evening was 4. This was all during the timeframe where I was hosting a game. With the protection my computer has (both commercial and private) I really dont see myself at any more risk from hackers than any average joe that touches the internet. ok.. am I missing something then? If I am, please let me know! I may be missing something here that will cause me no end of grief, so please be free with the help. Thanks Fehyd
WytchDokta
This is an FTP server right? What's the Host Type? I need to know these because otherwise I can't log in.
firefly2442
I think the thing you have to be careful about is the FTP server program that you're running. If you don't keep it up to date and constantly check it there are security holes that pop up and could lead to someone doing bad things on your computer that's all. Does your ISP give you unlimited bandwidth?
Fehyd
ok, after all the responses I have gotten, mostly negative, I'm rethinking this whole idea. For now, my FTP will be by invite only. That sucks, I know, but there it is.
Stinger
Dude I by no means am trying to put a hamper on your plan or to discourage you either. I just want ot make sure you know what you are getting into. It is a good idea but would take so much to implement. I'm not sure what you guys are talking about... I have been running an FTP site for a few years now.. I run it 24/7. I checked my log, and during the game I hosted this evening/night/morning I had sent out roughly 80 mb. I had about a total of 1 minute of a player reporting lag.. Am I missing something here? That is one day, with a small amount of data. Once more people would find out and there were as you told me there may be/have been 5GB then you will have NOTHING left over bro. The scale is enormous here. I would love it I hate FP but it would be crazy. And with all these people using it their dload speeds would be slower than heck too. Just tryin ta save ya. Fehyd
it doesnt matter how many people know about my server.. That's what I've been trying to tell you. I have full control of how many people are on my server at a time, as well as total control over the amount of bandwidth used per user. 2 people in my FTP at once.. that's not even noticeable. The 5 gig thing was referring to the amount of memory space I have reserved on my system for GR mods and stuff. I will have a seperate drive set up which has only one function. Serve GR people. Heck, I can run my FTP straight into my DVD drive. I've been doing that for at least a year. Bottom line: bandwidth - total non-issue ISP limit - no idea, but I've had back to back months with well over 2-3 gigs of files people have downloaded over the last four or five years, never had a problem. hacking - who's not at risk? Regardless of what I have going, there's always a loophole. No system/setup is foolproof/hackerproof. I'll protect myself as best as able. For now, the only way I'm going to be totally sure I remain hacker free is if I restrict all access to my FTP, and only allow people I trust. For some reason, I still just dont get the feeling that we are talking about the same thing. For those who know FTP, I will be serving using BPFTP (otherwise known as G6) Fehyd
Stinger
Good points, about Bandwidth though it IS an issue still. If you control bandwidth and say you have 500KB of bandwidth (which I would bet is really close to what you have) then 10 people at only 50kb (considered slow for broadband still). That is stupid. Why would you set all that up for 10 people?
firefly2442
(which I would bet is really close to what you have) then 10 people at only 50kb (considered slow for broadband still). That seems pretty fast to me. At 56k modem connection I only get about 4-5 KB a second. Sounds like it'll work to me.
Stinger
500KBs is very fast for Cable too and very very fast for DSL. Not to mention 56k. Feyhd has Road Runner IIRC and they don't guy any higher than that I believe. So proly closer to 300KBs any way you look at it not much would be going through for many people. Fehyd
I never said 10 people!! I said over and over.. I will have a limit of 2 people on my server at a time. I average between 400 and 450kbs. the average user on my FTP still only gets a max of 20-30 KBS. not everyone has cable. So, yes.. if I opened my server for 10 people, and ALL ten logged in at once, and ALL ten had high speed broadband... then, yes I might start feeling the effects, and yes, that would be stupid. However, this is just not the case. With the size of the average MOD, even 30 KBS would be excellent and quite fast enough for 99% of the 2 PEOPLE AT A TIME that will be on my server. (did I mention that my server will have a limit of 2?) If the other 1% wants a faster connection, I dont mind at all if they go to FP. Besides, I never once stated that I was planning on providing a faster download for Mods, I am just offering an ALTERNATIVE location. The whole original point of this thread was that I was thinking of setting up an alternative download location for people that have trouble finding mods, or those who do not like fileplanet. If you want a faster connection, go to FP. I was just hoping to offer an alternative. Again, this point is pretty much moot. As of now, I'm not planning on setting up a public server at all. Stinger
2 people? Sorry I missed that man my bad. But why set all this up for 2 people? Sorry but that just sounds rediculous.
Super-Bob
He not saying 2 certain people, he's saying 2 people at a time.
Stinger
I know that but it is still a pain in the but for that. Just my opnion though. Don't let what I say stop you Fehyd.
