Specter
Here's the way I see it, being Ex USMC myself. USMC FR is a spec ops unit, but for the Corps and the US Navy. They mostly conduct battlefield ops. No, they dont fall under SOCOM, and if they did, it would be for budget reasons. FR carries out alot of Spec Ops, but for the Corps, and the Navy. Although they do have units within FR that carry out some black ops, it all depends on qualifications of the unit, and the type of mission. There is alot of good info in this thread, both from books, and the people posting here, and it all should be considered, as none of us knows the complete story or operational perameters on SOCOM, as it is Top Secret. There isnt one post in here worth arguing over. There isnt any knowledge, that isnt worth having, no matter what the source. None of us will ever have all the facts concerning this thread. We cant, because none of us has the full picture, and if there were those of us that did, we wouldnt be allowed to talk about it. So there is really nothing here to argue about, at all. Everyone here just needs to take all the info for what it is, and check into it yourselves, and if anything else is found, post it. Although RS is accurate, and knows what he is saying, Im sure he will tell you, as well as any ex or active military here, even we cant know it all because so much of it is classified, and even active mil arent privvy to that info. Marcinko
FR carries out alot of Spec Ops, but for the Corps, and the Navy. Navy too huh. I thought the Navy had a very capable unit, called SEALs, that can do the same op's a Recon team could. Didnt know they did ops for the Navy. not tryin to be a smart ass, but seriously, didnt6 know they did ops for the Navy, i guess since Marine Corps a Dep. of the Navy... is that what ya mean? Specter
@Marcinko The Navy does have the Seals. But the Seals are highly specialized units that deal mostly in Black Ops. Yes, the do field Ops also, but their emphasis is more geared to Counter terrorism, and hostage rescue and the like. The Seals are mainly used in very particular situations, if Im not mistaken. If the Navy needs a good recce or pathfinding expedition, the FR boys are called to do alot of that. And yes, the entire USMC is under the Dept. of the Navy. As was said earlier in this thread I believe, different specialties. Edited June 24, 2003 by phantom110565

WhiteKnight77
Here is one op I know Force Recon did. Back when Uncle Ho died, Force Recon was tasked with getting pics for proof of his death. One of those assigned was a DI I had in boot camp. SSgt Nalbone (IIRC that is his name) returned with the pics and still had one that he would show us raw recruits. It was a bit grainy and taken from the back of the room, but it was Uncle Ho nontheless. How several US Marines made it into Hanoi and his funeral is beyond me, but it was done.
