Red Dot Live Action Trailer

Recommended Posts

Well someone's gotta be the unloved contrarian and I guess that's gotta be me... I bet the budget for producing this bit of... marketing cost more then a lot of games cost to produce; certainly more then the original Ghost Recon. Thank goodness Wildlands is finished and the most polished game Ubisoft has ever produced that will finally deliver on all promises -- so this was money well spent on advertising... Right?

Never mind that just about everything in it is off canon with Tom Clancy's writing and the original Ghost Recon game: with emphasis on histrionic narrative and character acting that was never what any Clancy novel was about or even contained.

Then there's the T1 Operator here doing the hoo ya, ghetto, hill billy, thug yeow snarl bs; might be great in kiddie "B" grade boredom action crap TV -- but this kind of thing has been over-played in games to the hilt, is bluntly not any good for military professionalism, and makes out would be professionals to be as deranged as the object of their attention; granted some are but that doesn't usually present this way...

Yuck...

That Ubisoft is pouring money into this kind of marketing AGAIN, that doesn't show anything in the game (compare this to BF and CoD where all advertising is in-game),  has promised the moon with respect to engagement and taking tactical realism seriously AGAIN, I'm more discouraged now then ever...

Yes, yes and more yes.

Games are addicted to this nonsense these days. Wildlands in particular has some of the worst, cringe worthy character designs I've ever seen in a video game. That's impressive, seeing as the FPS genre is filled to the brim with "my friends friends friend did a google search, and THIS is how SOF dudes look like in real life!"

Yes it's maddening, and I must escalate: military personal are some of the lowest paid, hardest working, and most professional people on the planet -- and they risk/sacrifice everything. Tom Clancy was a decent writer that properly conveyed this in his novels and I believe this is part of what made his books so successful; the realistic portrayal of military personal both in work-a-day life, and under the most punctuated, demanding and stressful circumstances a human being can be confronted with. A lot of it was idealistic to be sure, but that's what gets young people to take one of the most demanding oaths a young person can commit to.

Elite operators even more the case -- perhaps not so tightly wound on brass, spit and polish but the elite operators portrayed in Clancy's novels and the real world are corporeally trained, operate under war fighting conditions in peace time, and it's difficult to get them wound up, hearts racing and acting like cartoon television wrestling actors. They aren't stupid red necks, barely literate children of the ghetto, racial stereo types; it's an officers first club where college and academy educated officers lead, out in front, first under fire and they set the example of demeanor in every regard. Even enlisted T1 operators undergo A schools and training and have to demonstrate a level of academic competence that is as or more rigorous then the combat training -- and the equivalent of getting a Masters Degree with a 3.8 GPA required just to pass.

That the media, movies, and games relentlessly trivialize, marginalize, over amplify, and even insult military personal is no surprise. That Ubisoft continues to do it with an author's work that pointed this out is (I am not sorry to say): DISGUSTING. The only redeeming thing about some of these games is they wear Tom Clancy's name, and I've been able to play them with some of my friends that have served -- that's not a very tall complement. Wildlands looks cheap, it doesn't look like the culmination of seven years of work at all -- it' looks like Grand Theft Clancy Just Cause 17; cartoon, histrionic, rough and poorly executed. No wonder they're using live actors and p*** er... cats to sell it, AGAIN...

I've given this a week to think about it... and the more I think about it the more I get in my head that someone in ubisoft's marketing team walked in and said "We need to let the world know that we are not taking this game as seriously as we should be, so have a cat 'n' stuff, because as we learned from coco, boobs don't sell well enough."

This is the kinda trailer I would expect to see when a game is first announced. Not the kinda trailer I'd expect two months prior to release. I'd rather see some in-game footage than this. Thankfully, the beta is right around the corner.

LOL, well said! It' an unfortunate crass marketing fact that the data shows that women dressed like porno toys, puppies, and kitties are the things that do the best job at cementing a brand in people's mind -- pretty yucky exploitation stuff. I'm more discouraged that we're seeing so little in-game video...

After watching that BigFryTV video again that got posted here by someone a few months back, and a few others in his channel, I realized a lot of the criticism this guy has is valid. Initially  most of this went past me as I was distracted ogling the game's render candy, by BigFry's over top brash attitude and incessant swearing... But if you can overlook his presentation, and actually think about playing the game you're seeing -- he makes very good points.

I still think I'll find the game to be worth owning -- but disappointing, not very re-playable, and completely forgettable just like virtually everything Ubisoft has produced in the last 15+ years...

i mean, it's a funny trailer, and yeah it's got "yep, that's cats" written all over it, I think if i wasn't so attached to what ghost recon WAS i'd laugh along with it and think nothing of it. But I recently wrote an essay for my college course surrounding things similar to this and how important it is to ensure that the atmosphere is consistent with the game you're showing. You wouldn't expect a horror game to take place in rainbow cookie land unless it was a spoof.
