Game CTDs when going back to menu from mission

Hi everyone.

I've installed the game for the first time on Windows 10, and it gave me graphical glitches right off the bat. I was able to fix those.

Later, when I started playing the Heroes Unleashed mod, I came across a persistent crash, which doesn't have to do with the mod itself, since it happens on the vanilla game too.

I can start the game just fine, change settings and the usual. I pick my soldiers and their loadouts and then enter the mission. I make some progress, save the game, then one man dies and I try to "abort" the mission so I can reload a savegame. When it should bring back the menu, the game crashes. If I also try "restart" or "main menu", the game always crashes too, no exception.

I deactivated the mod, verified the game's cache through Steam, and tried starting a vanilla GR campaign which I randomly named "ble". It crashed when I attempted the same things. Here's the log:

ApexMods tried helping me and he said one of the causes could be this line:

RSFILEDATA: FindFile could not find file d:\game library\steamlibrary\steamapps\common\ghost recon\mods\origmiss\save\game\ble.csf_bin

I looked for the file, and it indeed exists, but the game is not reading it for some reason.

Any of you guys have any ideas?

Welcome to the forums, Capt.Host! Thanks for coming over from ModDB.

Looks like the game cannot read the CSF (Campaign State File), and this may be due to Windows 10 access rights. As I'm a Mac user myself, maybe some of our more Windows-savvy members can jump in with possible solutions here? Thanks.

I managed to re-create the issue.

I used Quicksave while in the mission to save the game.  When a Ghost died, I used Quick load to load the re-load the mission. This worked perfectly.

Then  I tried saving a mission with Esc > Save, playing some, then when a Ghost died, Esc  >  quit to briefing screen > Load - this caused a CTD.

I never use that method of saving (I only use Quick Save F5) - so this has not happened to me before.

Probably unrelated but I'm not sure that Capt.Hosts machine meets the minimum game specs - is that a laptop?

Hmm, I'm gonna try quicksaving and quickloading, see if it that also doesn't crash my game, like it didn't it in yours.

But even if it works, that will not entirely fix my issue.

I struggled to finish the first HU campaign mission, and when the mission ended and I should go back to the menu it crashed and wouldn't save my progress, so I was stuck in the first mission.

Also, I noticed you didn't have that error with the CSF file, which I have.

Though it would be relevant... Here's the log from when the game crashes when I finish the very first mission in the HU mod:

Failed to Reset Device Again

The exfil timer runs out, I get the mission complete message, my score, an aerial view of the castle, and when I'm supposed to fallback to the game menu, boom, the game CTDs.

Note that this log doesn't have the CSF file missing.

Now, just a thought I'm having... I'm starting to think this crash is graphical related.

I noticed the log mentions "Failed to Reset Device" and "Failed to Reset Device Again".

There's a reason the game's main menu is in that ancient resolution, then it switches to your native resolution (or whatever you choose in the options) when in-mission. This probably means there's a change in the game's rendering mode when switching from menus to missions, and vice-versa.

And I fixed it.

I swapped the ReShade .dlls I used to fix the flickering screen with the ones from the "Windows 10 Ghost Recon Flicker Fix" in this forum, which I believe that come from ENB.

Now it works just fine.

Seems like I created a huge problem by trying to fix the flickering screen on my own.

Thanks guys for taking the time to try and help me.

Rocky, you're talking about different things here. Capt.Host has an issue with the VANILLA game (without mods) not being able to load the CSF file.

Not really, both of his posts refer to HU.

The post above this is an error log after playing HU.

Capt.Host can you confirm the same issue above with only DS and IT active in the mods menu? I know its a pain to play the mission again, but trying to track down your issue here ....

Issue fixed apparently lol.

On the other hand you can be glad to have solved another mystery that may confound other GR players, too.

From now on this thread will provide the solution to these kinds of graphics-related crashes to others.

I should have picked up on those "Failed to Reset Device" messages. Indeed this pointed towards graphics issues, in this case switching back to the 640x480 menu resolution, and of course next to the usual culprit of graphics card drivers, any kind of code injection into the graphics subsystem (e.g. ReShade, ENB Series) can trigger all sorts of video-related issues.

PS: Hope we'll be seeing you around the forum again, Capt.Host. Maybe you'd like to join in on the fun when we reboot the "Ghost Recon Forever"  dedicated server?

I plan on sticking around.

I had lurked here before, in the time in which I played GRAW (which I never finished, sadly) and most recently watching your mod's developments, though I never had an actual reason to create an account.

Now that I did, maybe I can be of some use and help others and join discussions.

And yes, I'd love to join the fun when the server goes live. I'll be keeping an eye on that ;)

Remember this? There's always a reason to join the forums and post. A small message of feedback or thanks goes a long way to fuel a community, or in this case a modding endeavour. I mean, it's nice to see a mod being downloaded thousands and thousands of times, but one single message like this feels at least a thousand times better. :)

Of course I remember.

I know what you mean and I'm now realizing that I could've been much more supportive by being part of the community and, as you said, provide feedback and show my support and appreciation for your work, which is indeed a lot.

Well, lesson learned. I'll keep this in mind :)
