RileyFletcher_01
Okay, this game is officially too awesome for me. I'm going in as close air support with my Apache attack helicopter. It's night and the rain is steadily drumming on my chopper as I shoot through the dark sky, quietly commenting on the situation to my gunner. Just as I see the outline of the island, I see the streaks of anti-aircraft tracer rounds flying towards our chopper from an enemy anti-aircraft vehicle on the coast. I swing left, barely evading the stream of green tracer rounds that would take down our vehicle with one direct hit. Another burst comes towards us, and I swing back to the right. As I focus on dodging bullets, my gunner locks onto the AA gun and shouts, "Target marked!" I tell him to fire. He fires one air-to-ground missile towards the target. He begins to say "Target elimina..." but is cut off as a hail of projectiles pierces the cockpit of our chopper. I see my gunner slump forward in his seat, and in the very brief moment I have to think, I realize that the AA gun has avenged itself by taking out my buddy and almost destroying my engine. Zipping towards the coastline at nearly 250 kilometers per hour, I struggle to control the chopper. I look behind me through the shattered glass and see my tail rotor stop spinning. Turning back towards the front, I see a warning flash on the panel, telling me that a missile is coming my way. Swerving to the side, I drop a volley of flares as two heat-seeking missiles scream past my helicopter. As my engine begins sputtering, I continue losing altitude until I start brushing the treetops along the sandy coast. I put all my effort into pulling the chopper's nose up in a failing attempt to gain altitude before I hit the water. Just as I brace myself for impact with the surface of the ocean, I start to nose up, leaving a trail of waves behind me as the torn tail rotor drags through the water. I try to decelerate as I come closer to the friendly landing helicopter dock. I try to engage auto-hover to give me time to plan my landing, but this throws my chopper into a spin. As my helicopter turns around and around above the ship, I decrease thrust and begin dropping towards the deck. This minimizes the spinning, but the helicopter overreacts when I try to nose forward a bit. I lose sight of the landing deck as I move over it, and my attempt to slow down results in a dramatic cacophony of electronic beeping as my helicopter begins spinning again and making its final, dizzying descent towards the water. As my chopper speeds downward, I realize that this is my last chance to escape the doomed piece of wrecked aircraft before it crashes into the ocean. I pull the eject lever and I feel myself catapulted into the chilly night air. For a few seconds, there is total silence around me. Then there is a loud crash as my helicopter collides with the water, and I start to drift away from the ship as my parachute catches the strong storm winds. I try to force myself closer to the ship, but this just seems to push me farther away. I'm only twenty meters above the deck. I hear the sound of enemy speedboats coming towards me, and the crackling of distant gunfire startles me. Everything seems to freeze until my parachute catches a sudden gust of wind. It propels me towards the deck and I lunge towards the rail when I am only an arm's length above the ship. I land on the rail, but my foot slips. My parachute threatens to pull me back off the deck. I hastily unfasten the strap from the parachute harness and throw myself flat on the deck just as the parachute is pulled away from the ship. Friendly soldiers rush to my side and get me to safety as the ship prepares to depart. Another happy landing
Zeealex
Nice write up, I had a similar landing with a fast jet, to summarise I had been successful in my attempt to defend friendly airspace, but in doing so I had lost a large amount of fuel and I was nowhere near my airfield, I performed an Immelmann maneouvre and got myself on the correct bearing, but as I was approaching the airfield I had run out of fuel, me being the daring (and rather idiotic) person that I am, continued on to bank the aircraft around and land it. I only just made the main instrument runway's threshold markers and I suffered some damage upon landing due to the fact it was a straight slam into the ground, but I was able to get out of the aircraft unscathed and I wasn't part of the Martin baker fan club that day. You do get some interesting times in ARMA & ARMA2
Oelmuvun
Fluke landings are always fun. (900KB) http://www.poopr.org/images/ps4bdfujr929xra7ezbp.jpgIt was a few months ago but IIRC I just came in really slow and used the hill as a runaway lane. However that island is small and seems it was more intended to be a decoration. And no, there was not enough room for takeoff. Had this been any other jet a fireball would have resulted. Their wings are just not designed for slow speeds. However that VTOL one probably could have landed. haha
RileyFletcher_01
It sounds hilarious but I fly towards anti aircraft guns to challenge myself with emergency landings lol
