el gladiator 0
I want to join a multiplayer game for the first time. I go to multiplayer window. I enter the IP of the server I want to join in the "server name" column. I click on accept, then after waiting for a long time for the connection, a window says that a connection can't be realized. All the server names are always unknown. I have also tried to do the same thing with GR essential, but it doesn't work anyway. I tried different combinations port no. - IP, with no results. My firewall (Outpost) is closed and disabled. I have GR 1.4 P III 600 Ge force 256 32 MB Sound blaster live 1024 256 MB RAM Windows 98 SE Direct X 8.0 DSL connection. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

el gladiator 0
No, I'm not using a router, I'm not part of any LAN. I'm becoming a little frustrated... thanx
Specter 0
Ok. make sure that your muliplayer game tabs from the main menu and from within options in the game is fully configured. Make sure that if you are trying to join an internet game, that you are doing so from the Internet tab of the multiplayer screen, and not the LAN tab, highlight the server you want to join, and click the join button. Make sure that all patches were applied correctly. Did you apply the 1.3 patch first, then the 1.4? Are you using the same mods and expansion packs as the server you are trying to join, and if so, do you have the mods they require enabled? Most servers nowadays require Desert Siege and Island Thunder, the official expansion packs enabled, and may or may not have additional mods enabled. Are the servers you're trying to join using Kidbuster or another anti-cheat program? If so and you arent, you wont be allowed to connect. Did you try rebooting once you disabled your firewall? Most of the time, even if you disabled it, if you didnt reboot the PC its still running until you reboot. If you did reboot, was the auto start feature disabled? These are the most likely things to cause your problem. Check these things, and let us know. If you get it working, let us know that also, so that we can remember it for someone else. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. Just click on my name, and it will bring up contact info.
ARDelta 0
Can you ping the IP that you are trying to join? And, are you sure the server that you are trying to join is running?
WhiteKnight77 1
Make sure you click the Join Game button on the Internet tab. That button should be in the lower right hand corner of your screen.
SOTOMac 0
Also make sure that You allow Outgoing and Incoming Internet Traffic for "GR" If You have a Firewall running... Sincerely,
el gladiator 0
thank you evereyone for help but I didn't succeed yet I think everyting is ok with the configuration in multiplayer game tabs. It's also evident thet I want to join an internet and not a LAN game. The problem is: I don't have the server IP ping highlighted, and I can't update (refresh the server list). Sorry for being so dumb thanx
Specter 0
Are you also sure that the IP you are trying to join is still good, and hasnt changed? Most Ip's these days are dynamic, unless the user pays extra for static. Check and make sure that the user you are trying to join hasnt had his IP change. Last but not least, try uninstalling that software firewall you have and see if that doesnt clear up the problem. When you do, make sure you clear the entries out of the registry. If that firewall initially closed ports 2346-2348, even though you shut it down, it may still have a registry entry telling Windows not to allow traffic through them. Software firewalls do some very funny stuff sometimes. Especially with Windows. You are better off getting a router and dumping the firewall IMHO. By the way, who is your ISP? Also, you may need to rip and reinstall your network stack in 98, if that firewall did shutdown those ports. If you would like help doing this, I'd be glad to walk you through it, just get in touch with me. Click on my name on the right for my contact info.
