ZJJ
The Federal Trade Commission will put a leash on telemarketers July 1 by activating a national do-not-call list. Once you sign up -- a free service, by the way, and don’t let scam artists tell you otherwise -- the government promises a substantial drop in telemarketing calls within three months. Read full story here. Also, note the National "Do not call" Registry link - need to come back at some point and register.
XavierOnasis
We've had this in Indiana for awhile. It's kinda nice. When the phone rings, you know it's actually important.
Ruin
Worth noting: You can sign up for the National "Do Not Call" Registry online starting July 1 (see the link to the registry Web site at left under Related Sites), or you can call a toll-free number (to be announced in late June) if you live west of the Mississippi. Folks east of the Mississippi can call in to register a week later.
magnumkp
For those in Britain we have similar thing: http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/TpsR/html/default.asp The mailing/telephone and fax preference service. I signed up to all 3. My junk faxs were coming in at 10 a day. I don't get any unimportant faxes any more (plus if you do you tell the FPS who will notify the company.) If only I can stop those pain in the neck doorsteppers who want to sell me double glazing and switch my gas supply without telling me how much I can save. elpatricio
Haha double glazing, so true. Of all the things they could try and sell you down the phone, why on earth are they so fond of something as random as double glazing? ...the mind boggles. ZJJ
For those in the US that haven't done so and want to, now is the time to register at the National Do Not Call Registry to stop most of the annoying telemarketing calls. All registrations before August 31 take affect on October 1, 2003.
Schenkanator
Depending on my mood, I either say I'm eating, or I do the Jerry Seinfeld Routine; Telemarketer: Hello, I would just like to ask you a few questions about.... Schenk: Sorry, I'm busy right now, but if you give me your home number I would be happy to ring you back later and discuss this with you. Telemarketer: No, thats ok, thankyou. Schenk: What, don't you like being called at home by strangers trying to sell you useless (insert own word). Well now you know how I feel. connie lingus
Greetings! Yes, telemarketing is annoying yet so many people are buying from them! The "do not call list fines" for violations are way to high, this is a set up to collect huge fines from busineses. If you can't tax it, fine it! RooK
The fine is the incentive not to call someone on that list. If they do, I think they deserve it.
Kamakazi
I think it is in Iowa that if you put your name on the no call list nobody can call you except these organizations... 1. Phone Companies 2. Non Profit Orgs 3. Politicians LOL
