Need help with LAN Multiplayer

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping some one out there can help. I just purchased Ghost Recon Gold Edition. I am trying to play it MP but it cant find any other computers on my LAN.

Both systems runningn Win XP Pro, Firewall Disabled

Each system can ping the other

Using a Dlink DI-614 router

McAfee firewall - Disabled

GR has been patched to V1.4

I did not install Desert Siege or Island Thunder Yet.

Thank's for any help

The best thing to do really, is to make sure that the GR Ports are forwarded to all the IP's on your internal LAN. That way, there is sure to be no trouble. But definitely make sure that they are forwarded to the server's IP.

OK, I'm a little slow... I have opened 2346-2348 and still I'm not able to see the other computer. Then I removed the router and used a small 4 port hub. I could ping the other computer but still GR was not able to see it.

As I understand it, port's are a function of the router, by using the hub, I have all ports open. Is this correct?

MOHAA works fine on this LAN.

They are also (the ports) hampered by any softwall firewall you may have running. Is McAffee still disabled, and is XP's firewall turned off?

Are you using the LAN selection in GR for all 3 PC's?

Is the server configured in MP setup?

Are all 3 PC's running the same exact version and load of the game?

I had a similar problem but with a different firewall software. I had to completely uninstall Zonealarm firewall to get the 'puters to see each other on my LAN.

Yeah. Software firewalls are a total pain. If you have a router, uninstall that software firewall, making sure to clean out the reg entries as well. I havent seen firewall software made by anyone yet, that wasnt a pain for a home user or gamers to use.

They are very picky, need constant attention, and always change configurations.

If you have a router, you are protected by NAT, and the software firewall is unnecessary.

You need to install the NetBeui protocol on your PC's. This protocol doesnt come standard installed with Win XP. Here are instructions how to install:

To install NetBEUI on Windows XP:

Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive (close the Autorun window) and use the explore option from a right click of the drive in My Computer then go the \Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder.

Copy Nbf.sys to the "Windows"\System32\Drivers folder.

Copy Netnbf.inf to the "Windows"\Inf folder (hidden: change the View Settings).

(Where "Windows" is the name of the folder that windows is installed in)

Click Start , click Control Panel , and then double-click Network Connections .

Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties .

On the General tab, click Install .

Click Protocol , and then click Add .

Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK .

Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the installation.

The NetBEUI protocol should now be installed and working.

GOOD LUCK

No, netbeui is not necessary, and is not even incorporated into GR.

GR is strictly TCP/IP.

Netbeui only comes with windows for compatability with Novell networks, and I dont think its even necessary for that any more.

XP is setup by default with everything you need to play MP GR. GR is strictly a TCP/IP game.

DO NOT INSTALL NETBEUI. It will just clutter up the network stack and be totally useless besides.

All you need in your stack is this :

Client for MS Networks

QOS Packet schedulig

TCP/IP Protocol

File and printer sharing

Uncle Fester is having a config issue, not a connectivity issue. Installing miscellaneous unnecessary protocols will just clutter things up at the very least, and at worst, mess up his stack.

If you can connect to the internet, you can play GR MP, end of story. Its just a matter of getting the configuration right is all.

Did you check "behind firewall" in the multiplayer settings of the hosting puter? It's the only way it works for me. Otherwise, make sure the ports have forwarded udp as well.

i run zone alarm, wingate, and a few other items but i have a bridged DSL router so its pretty simple ...

internet-DSL bridged router

|

Gateway w/ 2 NIC's - zonealarm, proxy server

|

LAN PC w/ 1 NIC - GR server

in zonealarm you need to set the local zone to lowest security (allow servers to be pinged) *and* add the internal ip or entire range of your LAN under 'trusted' Zones tab in the Firewall menu.

when using wingate or any other proxy server (so internet clients can connect to your LAN behind the firewall) you need to open up the ports:

UDP 2347, 2348

TCP 2346

the advantage to running a proxy server is you can view all incoming connections and ban smacktards in real-time (should they be a cheater or tk'er), vs. waiting for the debreif, where they usually exit.
