Missing textures when playing GR in a virtual machine

Recommended Posts

Hello, all.

This is a rather fringe situation, so I understand if nobody has anything to offer!

I am currently in the middle of a year and a half of moving around a lot, so I don't have my gaming PC with me. My laptop if an Apple Macbook Air wich I play GR on in two ways: I boot directly into Windows 7 Pro x64, or I use an XP Pro x86 virtual machine via Paralells. Both work perfectly well performance-wise on my external 1080 LCD.

The issue that I have in the VM has never been a problem because it only manifests in the kit-sellection menu: The solder that is displayed in the little window has no textures at all ... weapon included. They are just completely black. This has never been an issue because everything is fine in the game itself.

However, last night we were playing the POW Camp night map and I found that the same thing happened to my buddy's textures and enemy soldier's textures under certain lighting situations ... they would go from normal to totally black, and then back to normal depending on the lighting situation.

Any thoughts on why this might be happening? For what it's worth, the VM has 512MB of video memory configured. I can increas it, but I figured that's more than enough for the game, right? I'll try it anyway, but in the mean time if anyone has any ideas as to what's going on, that would be great because it's a lot more convinient for me to play in the VM than to boot into Windows.

Thanks,

-Doc

GR Used to do that under wine on my linux system, i had to install directx 9 to stop it for you it might be a case of reinstalling.

Both excellent ideas, thank you.

I tried installing DX first, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I then did a clean install of GR/DS/IT but still to no avail. Finally, I tried bumping the VM video memory from 512MB to 768MB. No luck there either.

It certainly has something to do with the VM as I've never seen this on any of my other installations over the last ten years.

Again, it's never been an issue until I've noticed it on the night missions. Oh well ... small price to pay.

Thanks again for your feedback, and for your participation in the community!

is the pixel shader available on the virtual machine? sorry reinstalling DX didn't work :/

It was a good idea and worth the try ... no appologies needed!

Supposedly Pixel Shader 2.0 is used in Parallels VMs, but I don't know how to check to see if it's active.

I just found out that no matter how much video memory I allocate to the VM, the XP VM's are limited to 256MB. So I've never been running above that even though the settings said I was. I don't know that that's really an issue though because I think that was still a lot of video memory back in 02.

We played agian tonight and it definitely only happens in-game on night missions, and only in certain lighting situations ... usually when a character is being illuminated by a light poll or something similar.

Don't know about Parallels, but have an alternative suggestion. I'm using a Wineskin wrapper (free, open-source) with the PC version of Ghost Recon on my MacBook Air (Mac OS X 10.7.4) right now and aside from a little issue with videos (got them to work but skipping some of them causes an application crash) everything works just fine.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Download Wineskin Winery here

2. Launch the app and have it download the most up-to-date Wine engine and wrapper

3. Click "Create New Wrapper"

4. Launch the new wrapper app and click "Install Software"

5. Install Ghost Recon from the PC installer .exe

Done.

If you have any problems please let me know.

This is very interesting! I have a few questions:

Does the game have full network functionality from within the wrapper? (I play co-op and host the server.)

Can I access and modify the game files? (I edit my mod constantly.)

Since GR is a portable installation (the install simply copies the files to a single folder location which can be moved to any location and still work), can I simply copy the game folder into the wrapper's equivalent of the Program Files folder instead of reinstalling? (A small issue, but I am curious.)

This is very timely as a friend of mine wants to start playing again but now has an iMac ... we are just now starting to get him sorted out with Parallels, but this would be much simpler depending on the answers to these questions. Thanks for posting!

Networking/multiplayer works via LAN and TCP. Haven't tried hosting yet but shouldn't be a problem, either.

You have full access to the game files inside the wrapper bundle (ctrl-click and select "Show Package Contents") and can alter/mod them without breaking anything. The wrapper has a virtual C: drive with identical folder structures to a standard Win installation, and you can just drop the "Red Storm Entertainment" folder into "Program Files" to install GR. If you change mods a lot you may want to create an external alias to your Mods folder for easy access.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to go all technical on you ...

Holly crap, this is the coolest thing ever!

:phone:

I'm going to give this a whirl and if it works, I'll set my buddy up with this instead of a full virtual machine ... your timing was perfect on this ... right to the day. Thanks a TON!

This is the wrapper I use: DOWNLOAD

It's modified to allow game intro/outro movies to be shown and prepped for a drop-install of the RSE folder.

Excellent, thanks! Myself, I don't display the movies, so should I go with this wrapper or the generic one? (I've downloaded both at this point.)

The generic one should be fine, although you may want to use the "NoInput" version of the latest engine, as there seems to be an incompatibility with fullscreen mouse control of sorts. Using my wrapper shouldn't make much of a difference for you, although it will also show you those Ubisoft and RSE logo movies (or in the case of Heroes Unleashed the mod logo movie).

I may have used some other customizations to provide better compatibility than the default wrapper, but it's been a while and frankly I don't recall. :)

It sounds like yours is the best bet overall ... I'll report back shortly!

Network sever hosting works fine! (after updating Little Snitch, of course.)

Do you know of any way to tweak the mouse sensitivity down? I already have it at 0.1 (which is where I usually have it) but it's still too sensitive. I haven't looked around in the WINE settings yet, but I suspect there's something in there.

Thanks again!
