Ghost Recon Reminiscence on YouTube

Recommended Posts

Terrific video, Sidestrafe hit on some of the main points that we've been harping on about for years, mainly in an age of progress why are we seeing gameplay features degrade and disappear. When you list all that Ghost Recon had in 2001 against what Future Soldier is lacking, well, like Sidestrafe said, it is sad.

Isn't there a mod with a chicken launcher in ?

<_<

Did you not test the 1 in Blood Oil?

Save a copy of frag.prj, then edit it and change: iw_grenade_fragm67.qob to squirrel.qob

SP console command:

squirrelkite - Turns grenad's to squirrels - shoot at the trees and see flying squirrels

How does a thread about a fantastic video extoling the virtues of the worlds best tactical shooter from 2001, turn into a discussion on how that game could be modded to fire various small warm blooded animals out of oversized weapons?

Because not only is GR the best tactical shooter ever, it's also that GR.net is the best fan community ever!

:turned::<img src=:'> :group::drunk::bounce::harhar:

Since I've been working on the same GR realism mod for over 10 years now, I really like a little "unreal" diversion now and then.

Is it just me or does OGR actually look better in many ways than GRFS?

I know the map walk through vids on this site are from the Xbox360 but OGR is more than ten years old and I honestly think its not only aesthetically but graphically more attractive.

Add to that the gameplay and beautiful map design and it's still no contest. Jeez, some new games don't even have doors that open and close.

Sorry to leave you with a painful thought but imagine if Red Storm had been bought by a company that cared about what OGR was and just let them improve in that direction. We'd be on Ghost Recon 3 or something by now and it would be something truly amazing.

Fantastic stuff, great vid, good, fluent commentary, I agree with every word.

The original Ghost Recon, and that castle mission specifically, marked one of the five or six game/scenario combos in my last fifteen years or so of gaming when, unable to run a game satisfactorily, I upgraded my PC or even bought a new one, in order to play it. I remember the thrill of actually being able to play through that mission after a big, expensive graphics card upgrade.

It's true that modern, supposedly tactical shooters flatter the player into believing he's an indestructable badass at the expense of true tactical gameplay. And as I watched that vid, it struck me how interesting it was to be able to switch between squad members and use the overhead tactical interface to achieve the perfect squad disposition from which to advance through the level. It has to be said, though, that this method of gameplay is outdated now, for better or worse; people want the cinematic experience of leading a squad in real time, not the chess-like experience of placing pieces on a board. It should also be noted that the OGR style of gameplay (I didn't do MP in those days but played the living daytlights out of the SP campaign) depended on a pretty inert level of enemy AI. They did not use cover and did not maneuver tactically; enemy AI was essentially reactive and predicable, which was what made it possible -- and interesting -- to complete a mission flawlessly in either OGR or the early R6 games; it was doable via a combination of a good planning interface, body-swapping, inert, reactive AI and no time pressure. It's good gameplay but not realistic; r/l enemy defenders will not sit around and wait while you order your support gunner to adopt a suppression arc from cover and then spend the next five minutes meticulously positioning everybody else before giving a weapons-free order!

Ironically, the first game to exhibit an impressive standard of tactical enemy AI was a decidedly non-tactical FPS, i.e. Half Life, whose enemy marines could flank, deploy grenades and use cover. This is the example I always think about when bemoaning the dearth of decent tactical FPSes on PC these days; sometimes authentic tactical gameplay comes from an unexpected direction.

They don't?

There's always this wrong attribution of Ghost Recon's AI around. This game was released in 2001, more than a decade ago, yet it displays absolutely superb AI characteristics you won't find in any of todays "modern" shooters, and that includes scale simulation heavyweights like ARMA2.

There's just no denying it - Ghost Recon (2001) was, is, and (from the looks of it) always will be... the King of tactical shooters.

I start smirking and chuckling when I see stuff like 'the AI is terrible', 'they're so predictable', or 'that's what made it possible to memorize and beat it perfectly'. Ha.

I know we already have scientific video proof from Apex, but I gotta say this.

I script missions. I play my missions, and it scares me. Those badass tangos beat the tar out of me every time, because one time they'll cut down an alleyway or maybe they'll decide to flank you from behind the embassy. They might start fragging your position or they may just charge at you. They'll divert from their scripted paths if something goes wrong and they'll add in their own techniques into any plan to give them. They're even better off without a plan, giving them freedom and more ingenuity. Besides that, there is also just the real feel to them. In CoD, BF, any of those games, the enemy are fake. You know they are. They are not real, they don't seem real, they don't even look real. They're a bunch of bearded men with gas masks or stereotypical Russians with sunglasses. In Ghost Recon, those enemies were real. I remember one game on the M02 Farm map, playing the rescue mission. There was a two-man patrol coming down the road and I didn't want them to alert anyone if they spotted me. I dove into the murky ditch and waded through the puddles then laid down in the ditch. I waited almost two minutes, and then I started hearing voices. It felt real. If I spoke Russian and if that was actually Russian voiceovers, I would've understood them. They were having a conversation, laughing and every once in awhile one would cough or sigh. Then I jumped out of the ditch and start mowing them down with my MP5. You could almost see their surprise and fear as they ran back and tried to get away from the gunfire. They were yelling and calling for help. How many other games have you heard enemies talk in, aside from scripted cinematic baloney?

Anyway, not only are the AI smart and tactical, they act more real than any other game's technology today. Which is actually quite funny, considering Ghost Recon is over a decade old.

Yep, it felt real, the AI in Ghost Recon was great.

In GRFS I watched two of my AI team walk down a hill - in perfect unison, step by step, like a couple of robots. You NEVER saw that in Ghost Recon.

I'm playing Rockall Mod atm, the maps are amazing, and I'm up on th 4th mission only.

I agree with Rocky. I sent my recon snipers ahead of my other teams, and I CONSTANTLY LOVE the animation between these two when I go to F2 camera angle(???) as one Ai soldier scouts ahead, while one stays back and watches advancing team's rear and or snipe from a distance in case the advancing team doesn't see from his position, i.e. his in a valley and a enemy suddenly appears from a ridge

Yep, cannot get enough of that myself. And it's truly amazing that GR's AI can still surprise you after all these years. Played a game recently where I could have sworn those guys were able to read my mind! There just was no flanking them - they predicted my every move!

Talking about reminiscing... I think I've mentioned this YouTube link before, but the video is now quickly approaching 250,000 views and and has hundreds and hundreds of comments worth reading - so I figured it might fit in nicely here.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="720" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XvVZRwlwebo?hd=1" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>

Some recent comments:

"I miss this game so much"

"the best GR"

"This was back when video games had decent story lines"

"I'd buy it again if they remade this one with better graphics and AI. Just because it's an actual realistic warfare simulation."

"I remember playing this game with my older brother (god I hate him now after he got into those newer games like COD) I miss the old days and good old games! :("

"Wow the memories....."

"I agree the old games are better. Ghost Recon 1, Rainbow Six 1, Sum of All Fears, Raven Shield 1, Rogue Spear 1, Swat 3, Splinter Cell 1-3, etc. Today gaming sucks to the point I don't even pay any attention to it anymore, it's all dumbed down and sucky."

"This is the best intro to a game ever! Just listening to the narrator's voice, I know I am playing a game made for real men!"

"This intro is one of the best intros ever made, i can't name any new games that even come close to be epic as this one.. This just gives me the chills every time i watch it... I only wish Ghost Recon would have stayed like this, the future stuff just ruined it for me.. oh well, guess it's time for reinstall."

"I MISS THIS GAME TOO!!!.. THE BEST GAME EVER.."

"Back when developers knew that it was more fun to be victorious by using brains instead of invisibility cloaks, like it's ######ing Harry Potter or something."

"yeah, this is what I call a game. good atmosphere, no gamey console crutches everywhere like I was playing some arcade hall ###### game."

"online gameplay was fun as heck in this game. co-op was exceptional as well... hurts to think how good games back then were. Now it's just console arcade with japanese superspeed moving characters and crutchy cover systems"

"Red Storm Entertainment FTW"

"This Ghost Recon, plus the first three games of the Rainbow Six series and Splinter Cell, are the only games I considered to be the true games that are worth the Tom Clancy's title. Others are just CoD wannabes."

"this brings back good memories. no... this brings back great memories... literally one of the coolest shooters i ever played"

"I miss the days of challenging FPS games. I miss true realistic war games. I miss limping after i get shot in the leg I miss having but one life. I hate regenerating health (###### you COD) I hate Perks I hate 12 yearolds. I haven't played a good FPS game SINCE GHOST RECON. I miss you Rogue Spear I miss you classic Rainbow Six I miss you Ghost Recon. Gaming is not longer cool and fun. It sucks."

"Amen brother.....Amen"

"this was the best most realistic game I've ever played, and I'm in the canadian infantry. This game just gave you a feeling unlike anything else."

"Oh the memories this game brings back."

"This might be one of the best video games ever made. It was perfect."

"Why they had to ###### up this series so bad... why..."

"In my opinion this game is the only real Ghost Recon in this series"

"Best ghost recon ever made"

"Amazing game. Brings back memories of back in the day when I played this game a ton along with the expansions Desert Siege and Island Thunder. Also Rainbow Six Rouge Spear and the expansion Black Thorn were great games in that era as well. Now both series' are ######. It's been a while since we have had a solid tactical fps."

"This game was AWESOME! "

"I completely agree with you. As far as I'm concerned, Ghost Recon was and still is a extremely well balanced tacticall shooter game, and in my opinion, the best so far. No running, jumping and shooting there. Do that and you're dead, everyone would laugh at you. Tactics were an imperative and the team with the best tactics would win."

"AHH i seriously still can't explain enough about how good this game is! i still prefer it to any game today it was the icon of my childhood, it has the best missions, environments, game-play, places and music!"

"this has to be my ######ing favorite game everrr!!!! it's soo gooddd i enjoy every second of it! i still play this"

"i still play this game :P"

"me too! :D"

"Classic. Game like this with modern visuals would be ace."

"This was back when Ghost Recon was good! Now Ubisoft is ruining the series!"

"you can still play this on xfire and gameranger, timeless classic for sure"

"god 2001 was a great year for games"

"This game looked pretty darn awesome when it came out. The environments still feel more realistic than even Crysis' do... with a slight exaggeration but anyway. The sounds of the woods, the rain, the raided cities. I always felt like being there more than in any other games."

"My absolute favourite shooter of all time."

Thanks for typing all those quotes Apex, that is something I have wanted to do for ages. I often end up on other sites, general news gaming sites, and when GR comes up, you always get comments like those above. Not from hardcore gamers that come to GhostRecon.net, but just gamers in general, who appreciated that what GR did in 2001 was special. I always wanted to compile a list of quotes like that.

This is but a small excerpt of comments. That video has been up there since 2007, and the comments keep on coming more and more frequently. The thirst for the true Ghost Recon seems unquenchable, as it is the sole oasis of excellence in a desert of mediocrity.

Somewhat related is SideStrafe's current episode of his weekly YouTube show "The Strafing Run". While he's actually playing Blacklight Retribution, he talks about his thoughts on GRFS and the overall evolution of the Ghost Recon series, as well as the history - and future - of shooter games in general. Highly recommended!
