Rocky
7 months ago I bought a 1TB HD for £44, a similar drive now is more than double that price, nearer £100! Has there been a huge price hike in Hard Drives or what? Found it, flooding causes massive HD shortage.
Pave Low
Has there been a huge price hike in Hard Drives or what? ermm dude... the floods in Thailand Thailand is the world's second-largest HDD and component supplier after China. how have you of all people, missed the mass of stories on the web and papers the last couple of weeks about how WD, Seagate Etc manufacturing facilities have been affected and this is going to cause a global shortage of hard disk drives and components
Rocky
Seriously, I have not see a single headline or story about this, I just went to buy one and was like ######!
Zeealex
try hitachi or make one from a Japanese make drive. it'll be cheaper anyhow.
Pave Low
Hitachi also has a large manufacturing plant there which has been “severely impacted” (and Japanese manufacturing is still getting over the effects cause by the earthquakes/tsunami) while there is never a good time, It's particularly bad timing for people who were planning to get a new PC or HDD for Christmas as shortages are probably going to last until end of Jan 2012 or later Some businesses and IT support companies have already been going nuts buying up HDD stocks trying to maintain spares stock of them, so much so that some stores are talking about the possibility of starting a "one per customer type deal" to stop bulk panic buying (or gouging)
Rocky
Panic buying bread, I've heard of that, but HDs? Oh man.....
Zeealex
Hitachi also has a large manufacturing plant there which has been “severely impacted” (and Japanese manufacturing is still getting over the effects cause by the earthquakes/tsunami) seriously ? they are still getting over that? wow, must have been bigger than i thought. as for the panic buying, never a good thing to panic buy, you usually then end up overstocked and unable to break even Edited October 26, 2011 by Zeealex

Pave Low
A typical example of the meteoric price rise a Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB back in May = £ 55.98 Yesterday morning = £ 84.99 Yesterday afternoon = £ 130 This afternoon = £ 149.99 looks like it's going to be a good Christmas for SSD's and some pics of one of WD's flooded plants Guess it wasn't such a good idea to build on floodplain land after all.... no matter how cheap it was

twcrash
I remember in the 90's after the huge fire in Taiwan Memory rocketed to 100 dollars per MEGABYTE. I built a 4 Meg system you do the math lmao. those were tough times to build PCs. That was in a 386 SX with a 250 Megabyte Western Digital Hard drive and a 150 meg Colorado tape backup And an 8 Bit sound blaster sound card I bought used for 30 bucks. Oh Processor was Texas Instruments back then running Windows 3.1. Woohoo the good ol days Edited November 4, 2011 by twcrash
