Pave Low
Ubisoft are to use a one-time use registration code (called 'Uplay Passport') with new future games (starting with Driver: San Francisco, then Assassin's Creed and likely Future Soldier) Seems to be initially only for the xbox 360 & PlayStation 3 versions...no doubt aimed at the thriving second-hand resale market of console games UBISOFT® ANNOUNCES UPLAY PASSPORT Uplay Passport to Offer Access to Online Features and Exclusive Content Today, Ubisoft revealed Uplay Passport, a new program designed to provide players with access to bonus content, exclusive offers, and online multiplayer play. Uplay Passport is an adjunct to Uplay, an in-game service that offers gamers extra value, including a bevy of rewards and community features, just for playing Ubisoft games. The Uplay Passport program will begin in the coming months and will be included in many of Ubisoft’s popular core games. In each new copy of a Uplay Passport-enhanced game will be a one-time use registration code that, when redeemed, provides access to Uplay Passport content and features. The code can be found on the insert card inside the game box. Gamers can identify Uplay Passport-enhanced games by looking for the logo on the back of the box. Customers who’ve acquired a pre-owned game can purchase a new Uplay Passport online for $9.99 and automatically unlock the game’s online content and features. Starting with the upcoming DRIVER® San Francisco release, games featuring the new Uplay Passport will offer gamers exclusive bonus content plus access to online features. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/35900/Report_Ubisoft_Introducing_Its_Own_Online_Pass_System.php http://www.gamerzines.com/ps3/news/uplay-passport-ubisoft-online.html http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111674-Ubisoft-Prepares-Uplay-Passport-UPDATED http://www.shacknews.com/article/69305/ubisoft-announces-online-pass-dubbed-uplay-passport http://www.computerandvideogames.com/311677/uplay-passport-ubisoft-to-introduce-online-pass-report/ http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/15/ubisoft-announces-uplay-passport-online-pass-for-driver-sf-f/
MeanMF
This should come as a surprise to no one... The next step in a couple of years will be to make it a subscription fee and not a one-time payment. If we're lucky, they'll throw in a month or two for free when you buy the game.
101459
Well I don't want to sound all...Pollyanna about this, I'm not, but Ubisoft could take a smart turn with this and make it win/win for all concerned. The Uplay system could be used with time limited keys to offer Steam style full-feature trials of new games, and the used game fee doesn't have to be flat rate of $10; Ubisoft wake-up and smell an opportunity, set a new precident and be one of the first Publishers to really get themselves around the used game market... Nawww... Well, I can dream...
