need help with "smooth" in 3DSM

Recommended Posts

Still sort of a newcomer, and this didn't happen on the other guns I've done becuase they were "square-er", or built in sections. The stock I'm trying do do here is one peice.

If I apply the texture without smoothing, it looks good, but square. If I smooth (setting 8) first, the texture is wrinkled with the contours of the stock. Any help is welcome.

There's two different types of smoothing -- one just affects shading (and can be very effective) while the other affects geometry and makes the model much heavier in poly count. I'll see if I can put my video screen capture to work for this too...

Ok, in your lower picture, you've applied a single smooth group to the whole object. The smooth groups define how the shading of each polygon will blend into the shading of the next. You need to break your object into sensible smooth groups, and choose how much area to overlap for a smooth gradient, or where to leave no overlap for a harsh edge.

This file will be removed in a few days..

This uses DivX 4.2, you'll need the latest DivX codecs for this. Not sure how useful it really is with the quality setting I used, but it shows how I break up my smooth groups and overlap the top and bottom sections to blend in without getting weird results.

Thanks for all the help guys! This forum rocks. Earl, thanks for the vid. It went right in my GR Files directory. I'm tinkering with all the tips now, and they are making a difference. I still find that even the "render" in 3DSM is not exactly what you see in the game, which is sometimes better. So I'm exporting after every different change.

This Steyr with white stock will be in my next mod release.
