Arma X: Anniversary Edition

Ok so the rumoured release this month, is probably this

10th Anniversary pack of all games in the Arma series from Flashpoint to Arma 2.

Happy anniversary guys! Here's a box of games you most likely already have!

Oh dear... that's it?, that is a most disappointing attempt to squeeze yet more money for what is essentially just repacked product that we already have (and that can be bought better individually).

I could see the point if it became possible for BIS+Codemasters to slightly update the OFP engine for new O/S (like Ubi did with the Rainbow six collection packs) but to just put the existing games together in a single cardboard box and try to sell it as something new/hot

I recently picked up another "Operation Flashpoint: Game Of The Year Edition" for £5 from play.com as a "leave sealed on a shelf-back up", in case anything ever happens to my primary installation set.

I think most players will agree that ArmA was a "stop-gap" intermediate game which was immediately made redundant as soon as Arma 2 was released, I have a practically unused Arma DVD set and I don't ever plan to install it again.

I have a full set of Arma2 and expansion + the DLC's (most of which is digital download) so don't need to buy them again

and this is kind of baffling business sense given that they just released ARMA 2: Reinforcements "compilation" as anybody who might have been missing A2:OA DLC would have already got that

so is unlikely to now be interested in getting this "anniversary set".

even just looking at the content is baffling as to why they would think a compilation of them was a good idea:

*Arma2 is so new, most people will still have new media (but especially as they only recently just released several A2 compilations !)

*ArmA was not a great game, that was superseded by the much better A2 (This is like the free game you get in most compilation sets that nobody really would go out and buy otherwise)

*which only really leaves OFP as a reason to buy this, but most die-hard fans will already have several copies to hand to ensure they can play it well into the foreseeable future

and without any engine improvements/updates (which is never going to happen since split from Codemasters) there really isn't any motivation to get this pack especially as can still pick up GOTY for a few pounds in most store with minimal shopping around

sorry BIS but this is a very underwhelming "damp squib"

£ 44.91 for 2x games you should already have by now with all the previous specials and offers (and can get a backup version of much cheaper individually) and 1x filler game that nobody plays anymore

The big deal is that this contains the BIS rerelease of OFP that is optimized for the ArmA II engine (which you can download for free already, but you still have to provide a valid CD key). Admittedly, not that great of a reason to buy, but the truth is they have provided the engine improvements/updates, with exception to Red Hammer, which was produced by Codemasters.

Yes of course, and that was posted before A:CWA was revealed which was a surprisingly simple solution to the name ownership problem

But as I did say most FPS fans should already have a copy of OFP, but if not the GOTY can be bought nowadays for just £5

so yeah it's hardly a good reason to spend £44

Hmm... not really, you are overselling it a bit there,

at the moment all it is, is a folder name change, 2 new splash screens and a couple of minor fixes

There have not been any major engine or graphics updates yet (certainly nothing like to the level of the Arma 2 engine)

We hope those sort of changes will come in future patches but BIS are remaining tight lipped about if there are going to be any further updates (but that really is a discussion for the A:CWA forum)

If you still have OFP installed you don't need to enter a key it automatically detects the install

So will Cold War Assault be the old OFP and Resistance campaigns but remade using the ARMA 2 engine?

No, CWA is just OFP renamed (for the anniversary) and that's probably all it will ever be

at the moment all it is, is a folder name change, 2 new splash screens and a couple of minor fixes

We hope they might "improve the OFP graphics a bit" but that's probably the most we can ever hope for (they may just leave it as it is now… or possibly be the odd small update as and when they can squeeze time to do one or two little fixes in)

But no it would take way too much time and effort to remake it using the ARMA 2 engine

Especially with BIS main focus now on working on Arma 3 (and ToH)

It would be far easier for them to just make an OFP island in the new Arma 3 engine (and include it as a future DLC as it’s not part of the primary A3 story arc)
