That may be true, but the worrying fact remains that some "pimple-faced, basement-dwelling neckbeards" could so easily hack into all those corporate servers and obtain mountains of customer information. Just imagine what "not-so-pimple-faced-basement-dwelling-neckbeards" could do. Some blame should be put on the companies for not taking the security of their customer data serious enough. They go out of their way implementing draconian unsurmountable DRM, but customer data is carelessly kept in plain text on unprotected systems?

There's no arguing against that logic, Apex. Companies like Sony, who acted with reckless irresponsibility with customer information, certainly bear partial responsibility. One thing has been made clear to me: Corporations do not care about the security of their customers' information. They care about the bottom line. Period. I'd like to think that the recent string of hacks will force companies to take better steps to protect customer information, if only to protect their own bottom line, but I'm not naive enough to think that's going to happen. I'd also like to see the presidents of SCEA and SOE fired and successfully sued, but that's never going to happen, either.

Agreed. Although I do have some hope that those execs may learn from the experience. It's still unclear how Sony's negligence will translate to their bottom line, but I expect it to be at least noticeable. The only thing to motivate change is a discernible drop in shareholder value. Only when their golden calf is at stake will they begin to show signs of life.

Interesting take from The INQUIRER:

Some here at The INQUIRER strongly suspect that Lulzsec is actually a US government sponsored false flag nuisance hacking operation that's meant to stampede lawmakers into granting ever more draconian surveillance and control powers over the internet to the emerging US police state.

I had in mind something like a Red Cell... whatever.

LulzSec hacked also aljahad.com site (the one that TH3J35T3R had also put down) and pron.com.

He/She/they claim to have invaded 56 porn sites and released today a list with 62 thousand email/pass combination of the users, highlighting politicians and military officers.

Facebook promptly blocked all the emails listed one hour after the release (a fact that was praised even by LulzSec).

Things are getting out of control.
