Gold Edition GR won't start

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have the Ghost Recon Gold Edition. After installing the Ghost Recon disk and then the Desert Siege/Island Thunder disk, the game doesn't seem to want to start. After double clicking the GR desktop shortcut, the small "Ghost Recon" title screen came up, then the whole screen went black with a small hour glass, then the screen went back to the desktop. I noticed there was a taskbar tab for the program briefly but it disappeared shortly after everything went back to the desktop... Then nothing happens. If I try to start the gam a second time, nothing happens at all...

I've downloaded and installed patch 1.4. It seemed to install fine but the game still doesn't run. I also read that sometimes the intro video prevents the game from starting, and selecting the windowed option helps. I've looked in the directory for the "Options.ini" file to make those changes but couldn't find that file......

I'm running:

-Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @3.00GHz

3.00 GHz, 3.25GB of RAM

-Windows XP Home Edition V. 2002 Service Pack 3

-ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB

Res settings 1680x1050 on a Benq 22" LCD

Any help would be mutch appreciated

Just to clarify. The issue is that the code in GR that is responsible for playing the intro "movie" does not work with large screen resolutions -- no one imagined 1680x1050 when they made the game. The Options.xml that Apex provided disables full-screen and the movies will play.

Here is a link to another thread on the topic.

It is not a function of what OS you are running, but rather the resolution of your monitor. The integrated movie player simply does not know what do do with many large and widescreen resolutions, and unfortunately it does not fail gracefully. The fix for this is to get a copy of an "options.xml" that disables full screen and/or disables playing the introductory movies. I do not recall seeing anyone have CTD issues at startup that were not resolved by this fix. It may well be that your particular monitor, GPU, and driver configuration is something that the GR movie player "knows" how to deal with.

As a rule of thumb, if your display supports switching to a resolution of 640x480 pixels you won't have a problem. If this resolution is not supported by your display the game will CTD when it tries to play video sequences like the intro movie. This is a Windows issue btw - Mac users don't have this problem.

good evening peeps.. i just downloaded the [DELETED] copy of GRFS........

1. Yeah first off I would purchase the game and not try and get a cracked version to work.

2. I don't think talking about hacked versions is allowed here and will get you banned possibly

3. the fix he is talking about I assume is for Original Ghost Recon not Ghost REcon Future Soldier

I am also having the same problem, that GR Gold Edition won't load under Windows 8.1. Installed GR & 1.3, then DS, IT & 1.4. I see the GR title screen, the CD-ROM spins up, then nothing happens, as GhostRecon.exe crashes with no error message. Tried downloading that options.xml file, but it is unavailable.

Changing your desktop resolution to 1280x760 worked for me, it's the first chinema in the game that can't handle high resolution.

check the downloads here for the 1.4 patch. The one here doesn't require the disc to be in the drive so it doesn't access it. Try that and see if it works. If you can't find that patch on here hit me up and i'll grab you mine and upload it. Also before we do this is yours isn't the Steam version correct? (I know you stated Gold Edition but I need to make sure, 2 different beasts if it actually is)

Not to revive an old thread, but I have the same problem of CTD after fresh install, (I also only have base game, no expansions). The Problem is, I don't have an options.xml in my GR folder, so I can't edit it, and the link posted above with the fix is dead, does anyone have a download for it, or all the text supposed to be in it?

EDIT: Basically, can someone give me an options.xml?

http://www.mediafire.com/view/bpnrsc7aumtncmc/options.xml

Goes in the the Ghost Recon folder.
Show intro is set to false

If it does not start with this options.xml try editing the it with notepad and change:

<FullScreen>TRUE</FullScreen>
<FullScreen>FALSE</FullScreen>

If you do get GR going change all settings from the options menu of the game.

Welcome to the forums, SkySaac. While I'm on Mac, myself, I remember something about the game's copy protection not working properly on Win10. But I could be wrong, and I hope some of my Win10 using brethren will chime in here. In the meantime, one workaround would be to get e.g. the Steam or GOG release of the game (about $5).
