Operative
Yeah, the games were way more challenging. I actually jumped out of the chair in some games . They were more 'psychological', stressed the player, and were much more worth the playtime, rewarding the player for all the hours he spent trying to achieve that (well clarified and understandable) final goal. ROCO*AFZ*
More like.. 1994 - Buy game, everything works - used xfire for friends or back then - all seeing eye or ip lists. (somewhere along the way and ts for comms)happy customer. 2011 - Buy game, Nothing works, patch patch patch ok up to level 5 works but still no friends list. Comms in game still broken. TS works but can't find friends grrr 2012 - Game is old and shelved - new patch - friends list works, everything else broken. 2013 - blow the dust off - if new version with new broken game doesn't come out - patch - works. Zeealex
i have to say that image pretty much describes old vs new, i thing these days there isn't a challenge just in case people don't buy their franchise this is what i see, 2006 (when i started gaming first one i had would have been GR if i recall) happy jolly stick it in the drive install, no issues, take it out of the drive, play, happy days 2011: DRM DRM DRM DRM, ENTER YOUR BILLION CHARACTER LONG CODE HERE, YOU SPELT IT WRONG YOU ARE A PIRATE. YOU NEED INTERNET CONNECTION TO PLAY THIS GAME IF YOU DONT YOU ARE A PIRATE, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! that's the DRM side as for gameplay. 2006: i was actually challenged but the AI was a tad dumb AI: it's magical how they can see you a mile off yet be so dumb you: you can magically regenerate your health after being shot god knows how many times HOWEVER Dead space 1 and 2 did pick at my brains slightly
WytchDokta
DS1 on Impossible difficlty is a hardcore brain picker, until you reach the end boss. Then you can just sidestep all the way left and right to easily the boss' blows. You can take him down in less than 2 minutes on Impossible without even getting hit. I think Roco just about summed it up, what with the amount of alphas rather than stable games being released these days. And you know, back in them days, you didn't have cheating AI and the player was not constantly punished. River Raid, Space Invaders, Pong, Chaos Engine, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Zool, Superfrog, Soccer Kid, Syndicate, Citadel, Fears.... Developers could learn something from those games (like a doing a reboot of the mighty Chaos Engine series of games). Special activated: Repel Monster! Old skool is where it's at. ApexMods
[...]great little game[...] 'Great little game'?!?!?!?! At the 1995 Computer Game Developers Conference, TIE Fighter earned Totally Games the "Honored Developer Award". TIE Fighter became the second Lawrence Holland game to be inducted into Computer Gaming World's "Hall of Fame", and was inducted into GameSpot's "Greatest Games of All Time" in July 2004 and IGN's "Hall of Fame" in 2007. PC Gamer ranked TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM #1 in its "Top 50 Greatest Games of All Time" list in its May 1997 issue, and #13 in April 2005. In its 2007, 2008 and 2010 "Top 100 PC Games of All Time" lists PC Gamer would rank it #49, #63 and #73 respectively. It was ranked #3 on IGN's list of the top 25 PC games of all time in 2007 and #2 in 2009. It was ranked #11, #9 and #12 on IGN's "Top 100 Games of All Time" lists in 2003, 2005 and 2007 respectively. The game was recognized by IGN once again in 2010, when it was named the best Star Wars game ever made. In March 2004, GMR magazine rated TIE Fighter the second best Star Wars game of all time. ROCO*AFZ*
Wait... lets go back even farther... Tron - 1982 ( I was 7!) Gauntlet - 1985. Spent a lot of quarters in that game. Could have bought 10 Call of duties with the amount i played. (I was 10!) And then i hit the land of the commodore 64. Winter games, World Games, Summer games Dungeons and Dragons pool of Raidiance Kings of the Beach volleyball Beach head Blue max And the best military game for the commodore- Airbourne Ranger - Played it almost every day lol Then PC Kings quest - whole series. Test Drive - whole series Top Gun Harrier Jumpjet Doom Series Duke Nukem for PC Quake Series Deer Hunter Series Tombraider (Heck of a brainteaser of puzzles) 1st Military MP was Delta Force Land Warrior - That is when i joined our clan AttackforceZ Ghost Recon (OGR) - Matched in and played every day. i logged over 1600 hours in this game GRAW1 - Matched in GRAW2 - Matched in COD4MW1 - Matched in CODWOW - Couldn't match... wasn't patched to match until after everyone moved on Operation Flash point dragon rising (Played 2 weeks then shelved) Battlefield Bad Company2 (Released not done but once they finished it, great game... too bad COD took players away while it was beta like)- Clan not big enough to match in COD4 Black ops (Skipped MW2 cuz i new the anticheat was not going to work) - (Took forever for matching - decided we'd skip it as there are new things coming out. Zeealex
indeed, it shows how linearity has somehow taken over and the game is too easy to follow these days

Zeealex
As for the Engines 1994 in a sequel to a game: apparently the word does exist today with sequels i think you can sort of guess what producer i am stabbing at there
