Help me figure this out.

Hi all, OldGhost here. Still playing GRAW1 and 2 once in a while. My gaming computer is over 2 years old now and I have been living with this headache sense I got it. This includes my monitor.

I am running 2 computers on a KVM switch and I am seeing the same thing on both computers (but less pronounced on the other one) which makes me think that this may be a monitor problem.

Here is what I am seeing: When I move the mouse fast as if looking around, or turing the corner of a building, things with vertical lines like buildings or windows get one or two large jags in the middle of my screen. Like a crease in the picture. My FRAPS is telling me that my frame rate is fine and there is no herky jerky movement like my frame rates are too slow or the computer is bogging down.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

In the setup section of my monitor I can either choose 60 (cycles?) per second or 59 cycles per second. It is currently set to 60. Could changing this to 59 help?

My screen is a Samsung Synkmaster 206bw with a 2ms responce time.

My other headache is probably a driver problem best discussed on another board but I will mention it here sense I already have your attention.

GRAW1 mission2, is where I see this the most. While in the chopper heading to the L.Z. and looking at the rifle of the Ghost in front of me, the wall of the magazine well flickers and appears and disappears allowing me to see the magazine behind it.

Is this a driver problem somewhere?

Has some piece of game programming been dropped and will reloading the game without first removing it fix this?

Or could it even be the KVM switch?

My Hardware is:

Motherboard....................ASUS P5K64 WS.

CPU..................................Intel E8400

Memory.............................2gigs Patriot Extreme Performance DDR3

Graphics Card................ASUS EN8800 GTS

Hard Drive........................Raptor. 10,000rpm (I forget who makes it)

Sound Card.....................Soundblaster FATAL1TY Extreme Gamer.

i was about to suggest turning Vsync on myself, it can damage hardware in the screen and in the PC but the probability is low. keep the screen's refresh rate at around 60hz if its 2 years old now.

oh! for the record your hard drive is a Western Digital VelociRaptor. :D

As Roco said, the KVM switch may well be the issue. I also run a KVM switch. Have the same kind of issues with the following:

OFP:DR - Unplayable mostly

COD5 WAW - Ambush missions unplayable

L4D2 - Swamp levels jaggy creases in middle of screen

GRAW1 - laggy - K/b and mouse switch on and off randomly

Only solution for this is to plug the keyboard and mouse in direct to the PC for these games.

I have a lot of games, only the above are effected.

Thank you ROCO. Your mention of Vsynk triggered a mamory. Some years ago some thoughtful Ghost posted a link to "Tweakguides" by Koroush Ghazi. Anyone reading this that doesn't know about Tweakguides, look it up. They are a vast pool of knowledge about all the workings of your vedio card and how to get the best out of your games by changing the settings on your video card and in game settings.

I had bookmarked the Tweakguide on GRAW so I went back and re-read the part on Vsynk also linking to other Tweakguides about Vsynk. I tried enabling Vsynk and here's what I found:

Turns out the jags I was seeing in the middle of my screen is called "tearing". It's what happens when your video card turns out more FPS than the refresh rate of your screen. (60Hz). I enabled Vsynk and it got rid of the tearing but instead I got a noticeable very fine stop and go in my movement. I also got what can be best described as mouse drift. My aimpoint drifted past where I stopped it in the picture. The Tweakguide also suggested enabling triple buffering and it helped but didn't eliminate either problem.

So I guess it's just a matter of picking what kind of annoying thing I want to look at. I'll stick with the tearing sense everything else runs so much smoother and I can get on target faster.

So that's the answer to my first question. Now what about the flickering magazine well?

Mouse accelleration? ?

Haven't herd of that one.

Can someone describe it please?

By the way. Been playing GRAW1 and GRAW2 and experimenting with my graphics card settings. As I said, enabling Vsynk caused a new set of problems. But disabling Vsynk and keeping triple buffering enabled, seems to have turned my graphics card loose. Frame rates are through the roof at just over 100 FPS most of the time. But being close to a good explosion can still drag it down into the 30's. Still, I know that the GRAW games are demanding on graphics cards and it's nice to know that my whole system can perform that well.

I'll check to see if my screen can handle 72hz but I don't remember seeing that option. If I can do it and enable Vsynk along with triple buffering, it could solve all my problems.

More news as it happens.
