I need to set up a home network, I'm not sure where to start looking.

I think I'm gonna need to set up a wireless one, anyone know of a good website that will point me in the right direction.

Thanks :)

Thre is one thing you will need to remember about wireless, and that is security. If anyone so chose, they could be anywhere in the local area and tap into it. Just something to be aware of.

Im not saying it will happen, but it could. They can conceivably bypass the router completely and go right to the wireless NIC. You will probably want to consider a software firewall in the case of wireless, and everyone knows how I utterly despise software firewalls, and the constant attention they demand.

Make sure before you go wireless, that you have all the facts, that you are prepared to deal with a software firewall, and you will have to purchase one, because the XP firewall will give you grief for gaming, as it is unconfigurable.

Just make sure that your reasons for choosing wireless over wired are warranted, and be prepared for the extra stuff you may need to buy and hassle with to secure it.

As for equipment, either way you choose to go, Linksys is a great product and you cant go wrong.

For the price I paid for that D-Link DI-704P, I'm very happy with the performance.

4 RJ-45 Ports plus one Parallel for Print Device sharing. As mentioned in that thread zjj recovered, I had initially considered wireless. But security and interference were two things I wanted to forgo.

Besides, it was much more expensive, and at the time, I didn't have the money to purchase a wireless NIC card for every computer on my network.

I agree with phantom though - consider LinkSys, and also look into D-Link or Netgear products.

For me wired is perfectly fine, but my mom doesn't want to drill holes and have wires running around. I hope i can convince her otherwise, cause 1. wireless costs alot and 2. its not that secure, and I don't want the neighbors to be able to use our connection.

I've checking out the Linksys routers, and they seem like the right choice, also my ISP openly supports the brand and they will help you with problems if you use a Linksys brand product.

I too am using a DLink, a DI604. But given a choice, I would take Linksys for ease of setup, and I trust the name. Never had a bad product, ever from them.

As for wireless, no thanks. I dont get interference, and the connections are mine, and I can block off my network from the internet without any additional worries or hassles with retail viruses in a box.(My idea of what software firewalls are.)
