Stuck at 640x480 and 4-bit color

I'm having an issue (well, a string of issues) with my wife's computer. First, her ATI graphics card died. So, I uninstalled that, and put in an older FX5500 AGP card for her. The card works, there's a display. But when I install the drivers, the display is stuck at 640x480 and 4-bit color. If I uninstall the drivers and reboot, I can set the resolution up to the monitor's max, and 32-bit color. As soon as I install the drivers though, it gets stuck at the low resolution and 4-bit color.

Can anyone help? I'm ready to put the whole computer through a window!
