ROCO*AFZ*
I have recently switched jobs and now work for a non-profit. In the evergoing quest to find a way to block users from bad sites, i tripped across this software... http://www.untangle.com/ We are using the linux version with a p4 w/2gb of ram and 2 network cards as a router / filter. I have to say it's awesome. Virus protection (nice to have a 2nd layer besides endpoint on the desktop) User web tracking and blocking of porn and other sites with logs Anti phishing Antispam anti spyware That is with the free open source apps. There are some paid apps but with this i see no reason for any of them lol. We are using it to watch and protect roughly 50 users on our network. Jody
Really handy link ROCO AFZ. A lot of good appliances are built on free bsd or a derivative of linux. Cisco as well as other companies offer appliances along these lines only more glorified due to their high cost but untangle looks really good. Even the lite version comes with enough software to offer more than adequate protection for home or office. Thanks for sharing the link.... ROCO*AFZ*
Yeah we use it for work here since i now work for a non profit. It updates every few months also which is great even in the lite mode. We use the blockers for porn and such. Also the firewall and basic antivirus / spam filter though not 100% takes out the 1st wave of baddies (we have paid protection as the 2nd layer). The ad blocker also works good. If i had more of a budget i would up to the next level as bandwidth QOS would be nice but for the basics, you can't beat the free. We have 50 computers on this network going through 1 pc that is just a 2.4ghz P4 (no hyperthreading) with 2gb of ram (Which it never has topped so far) and it works fantastic. Speed wise, no slowdown. And this is coming from someone who doesn't usually use linux for anything more then a web server... it's precompiled and just works. Jody
we use the Cisco ironport web and email appliances at work. They run really well and similiar to you we have around 50 windows clients on the network and prior to security appliances, they were always becoming infected. Bear inmind we do pay for all the bells and whistles that Cisco has to offer and it is expensive considering its built on free bsd with some custom apps bundled into the system. I was quite impressed by the untangled web site though, the features are very good and im sure the price of the bells and whistles will still be good value for what they do.
