Rocky
I've some 16x DVD-Rs here but NERO Express Essentials is burning them at 18x and turning them into coasters. I can't see anyway to reduce the burn speed in Nero Express Essentials. Is there a free alternative burner I should use?
CR6
I used to use Roxio Easy CD Creator but I have exclusively been using Nero 7 Essentials for the last couple years. (I think I got it with Lite-On drives) What version do you have? In Nero 7, you can adjust the DVD burn speed in the last dialog window by expanding the left side of the window (there should be an arrow to open it) Then you can adjust to burn at 8x, 4x, 2x etc. I usually burn at 4x, but my media is pretty old. If you are using Win Vista/7 there is built-in DVD burning.
JohnTC02
Strange, I've never had a problem with Nero, saying that I think my copy is quite old, I use Nero 7 Premium and, never needed to change the burn speed it's just set to something like auto detect. KRP 56
As CR6 mentioned in his post, you should be able to open that tab and adjust burn speed to desired settings. I've got the basic Nero 6 and 7 that came free with some optical drives I bought and they will both adjust burn speeds.
Rocky
There is indeed a small arrow on the left that opens up a new pane, with an advanced options button. Opening that gives me a dialog with 8 tabs, but none of them have burn speed in it. Can you check and see which tab it's under on yours, looks like mine does not have it. WhiteKnight77
Have you tried to download Nero Burning ROM should allow you to change the speed and is part of Nero Express Essentials. You should also be able to download some other free software for Nero like DriveSpeed or DiscSpeed. I think I am gonna stop by the the local Staples up here to pick up Nero 9 Ultimate on sale for $60CDN.
CrowmanUK
I always use nero burning rom for all my dvd's mate, and I never set dvd burning faster than 8x even though the dvd's can manage 16x, call me paranoid but I can wait the extra few minutes it takes. Never really liked the all the extra nero waffle either when burning rom does everything I need it to do.

I have the full version of Nero 9 for me, in the Nero Express module part of it: On the front page select Data CD or Data DVD It then goes to Disc Content page (when you add the file(s) you want to burn then select next) This takes you to the Final Burn Settings page - If you click the [left arrow box] it opens a side bar where the top option here is writing speed (also has writing method and some other options)
Rocky
edit************** AWE BLOODY HELL. Thanks Pave, it took your detailed write up for me to find it, I have to click all the way to the burn page, (ie even past the above SS) and *then* there is the burn speed! Thanks guys, for baring with me.
