Microsoft Security Essentials wanted to update to a new version tonight (full, not just a virus definition). When it was updating I must have clicked cancel by mistake as it went though an abort.

Now though I try and update it and it says it is the uptodate version :wall:

Is this built into Windows 7? I ran the about for Windows Defender and got this:

Dunno if they're similar or different though.

Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials are different "products"

Windows Defender has been included with Vista and Win7 from Day 1 and is more an antispyware product

MSE is a free antivirus which also includes antispyware, and is an evolution of Microsoft's previous OneCare product that you had to pay for.

On my Win XP 32-bit install, before the product update I had:

Definitions created on: 3/8/2010

Virus definitions version: 1.77.575.0

Spyware definitions version: 1.77.575.0

After the product update I got:

Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1961.0

Antimalware Client Version: 2.1.6519.0

Engine Version: 1.1.5502.0

Antivirus definitions: 1.77.691.0

Antispyware definitions: 1.77.691.0

BTW, if you have installed Microsoft Update on XP, the usual "patch Tuesday" updates will automatically update your MSE client version. Otherwise, MSE will notify you that there is a new version available.
