Rocky Posted February 16, 2010 Share Posted February 16, 2010 I've got a PC here that reports page not found in FF and IE for any attempt to browse the internet when connected to my confirmed working home network. However, I installed MS Security Essentials, and it managed to connect to the interent to download the latest definations file, and reported no virus after a scan. Anyone got any idea on how to resolve this? I googled a bit and came up with a winsock command to run, but I thought I'd check in here first. It's nothing to do with the router as all other devices are connecting fine, there is something out of sorts on the PC. @FF good idea, but no luck. "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 87.124.26.121" This is issue is on a friends PC and he says it happened after he uninstalled Norton, or maybe McKafee. Oh, and it CAN ping to domain names! So it is definitely connected, can download virus updates etc, can ping, but cannot browse. And I even tried on a fresh FF install. Rocky Posted February 17, 2010 Author Share Posted February 17, 2010 FIXED IT I browsed around on my own PC trying to find a solution for "can ping but not browse", eventually I found one guy saying that is Norton had been installed and removed, then you might need to also go to the norton site and download an uninstall tool to completely remove it. So I went to here, download the tool, ran it, restarted and then everything was working perfect. I think this is absolutely ridiculous, how can a supposedly top line security suite mess up an uninstall to the point it renders a computer incapable of browsing the web? It leaves the end user with no clue as to what the problem is, and no internet to figure it out. I know some of you use Norton and McKafee but I've seen so many PCs with so many problems directly attributable to these programs I would NEVER recommend them. JohnTC02 Posted February 17, 2010 Share Posted February 17, 2010 If I had know you were using Norton and had uninstalled it I may have been able to help as I had the exact same problem a few months ago. I got rid of Norton and installed AVG, here's a lesson to us all, just because it's a top end program it doesn't mean it's the best, for me the free version of AVG works better than Norton ever did. Pave Low Posted February 17, 2010 Share Posted February 17, 2010 This isn’t a Norton fault this is due to a know problem with Windows What happens is the TCP/IP stack Winsock settings & catalogue can get corrupted, usually during the installation or removal of any networking software (& sometimes due to Malware) . You will be able connect to the Internet, but the packets won't transfer back and forth. The usual solution is just to reset the Winsock Catalog to a clean state or default configuration using a netsh winsock reset command from a dos window this problem is easy to confirm as usually the event log will contain a number of error messages pointing to it (or just ask the user what do you just do last ? ) Using a free A/V is like having a cardboard door on your house NIS is top in my tests of over 15 years of actual use on various systems & networks and the latest version is the best so far. CR6 Posted February 17, 2010 Share Posted February 17, 2010 I think getting your computer infected/compromised has a lot more to do with surfing/downloading habits than what software suite you use. I have a friend from China who uses (a cracked) Kaspersky but he complains his computer gets infected a few times a year - likely because he uses a lot of other software he downloads from Chinese sites. I have stayed away from Norton for years because I found it just too intrusive. If I was going to pay for something, it would be McAfee or Kaspersky, but I generally just use AVG and now MS's Security Essentials In the end, I read a security expert say that just assume that your computer is already infected with trojans/rootkits/whatever and 1) be careful what personal info you put on your computer and 2) make sure you back up all your valuable data externally and on a regular basis.
