MrC 0
For some reason i'm getting the following error message " Cannot locate CD-ROM...Please insert CD-ROM, select ok and restart application". Some games are loading up fine, Morrowind, GR, GTAVice City, others are not....Raven Shield and OFP Resistance. Its only just started happening, the only thing i've done is install Vietcong, and that works fine. I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the DVD drive but it makes no difference. And uninstalling Vietcong, still same error message appearing. Any help would be welcome. Specter 0
What I recommend here, is to go to the manufacturer website for your drive, and download the latest firmware update for it, if there is one. It sounds like it is just the latest in copy protection algorythms giving you trouble. The new update should take care of that for ya. Just make sure you get the model number and mfr. correct. Also, consider getting a cd drive cleaner and running it through to clean the lens. Scotch makes an excellent one. Edited May 22, 2003 by phantom110565
MrC 0
Went to Samsungs site, downloaded the Firmware autoupdate software, ran it, (said everything was up to date). Still getting the same error message. Next step is the cd cleaner then. Hope that works or i'll need a new drive i guess. Back to Alienware you go my lovely
RooK 0
Why back to Alienware? You can save the money in shipping as well as hassle by just buying a $30 DVD-ROM and hooking it up exactly as you see your current drive hooked up.
MrC 0
I'm not spending dollars mate, Americas far to far away to buy a DVD drive from But i know what you're saying. But i've only had the PC for about 3 weeks, and a brand new system shouln't be giving me problems. Not for the cash(£s ) i had to shell out anyway.

MrC 0
GR works fine mate, its some of my other games that don't. Its only just started to happen today. OOOOO gotta mention Frostbite whatta Mod!!
Specter 0
On the games you are having trouble with, are you able to explore the CD's and launch the files manually?
MrC 0
Yeah, I can explore the CD, open the files etc. But if i try to use autoplay, the respective launcher will open as normal, but when i try to start the game i get the same error message, although on Raven Shield i get a " please insert CD-ROM2 " message, i guess because you install that game with 2 disks. I know the UK has places you can buy pc parts from, it's not just here in the US. Besides bypassing the hassle of a wait time, you will also gain another drive to put into a future PC build. DVD/CD-Roms are dirt cheap and easy to install. Somtimes CD-Roms crap out as well, have one of those in another system. Just trying to give you a fast solution. 300Mag 0
I notice that you are running an NForce2 motherboard. I have one as well and believe I have a good idea of what is causing this. Did you recently (last couple days) install a new version of NVidia's unified drivers? I believe the version number is 2.41. They just came out. If so, there is a new IDE driver packaged with these drivers that is causing all kinds of heck. One of the main issues is previously installed games/applications that require the CD to run no longer working. Also, misidentification or complete ignorance of DVD drives. If this is the problem, correcting it is simple. Go into device manager and roll back your IDE driver for your hard drives to the previous version. All will be well at that point. I'm using the standard MS IDE driver from 2001 and it works great. Difference in performance is very minimal. You don't have to uninstall the entire driver package. Just roll back the IDE driver. You can get the included NVidia IDE driver to work but it involves an OS install to do so if you are getting these types of problems. I had the same happen. I tried to reinstall the games that failed to work only to find the fail again. I hope the above is the issue you are having. If not, I appologize for the guess. It sounds identical to what I just went through. Edited May 22, 2003 by 300Mag
300Mag 0
Just found something interesting. NVidia released ANOTHER set of drivers yesterday. Version 2.42. Here's the somewhat official story: New Drivers They received so many complaints from users for version 2.41 (Released last Monday) that they released 2.42 yesterday. Don't bother grabbing it. It is nothing more than version 2.41 with the IDE driver removed. Rolling back the IDE driver will accomplish the same thing and make certain the problem goes away. Loading up version 2.42 will leave the nasty IDE driver in place. Here is a great reference site for NVidia motherboard chipsets: NForcers HQ Edited May 23, 2003 by 300Mag
MrC 0
300Mag i think you nailed it. I'll try your tip about the IDE drivers. I should learn never to update my drivers until they are properly tested Yep that worked. Rolled back the IDE drivers and the DVD drive works ok now. Thanks for the help guys. 300Mag 0
MrC, Glad it worked for you and always a pleasure to help. NVidia took a ton of heat for this little gem.
