Motion Sickness due to excessive headbobbing

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have played OPF:DR for a day now, and I think it looks interesting.

After having played a lot of GRAW1+2 the recent years and being used to the ultra-smooth player-character movement in those games, I am not very impressed with how the player-character moves and feels. Its very stiff in comparison, I think. Also, the walking (semi running) and sprinting speeds seem rather odd.

However, unfortunately thats not my biggest problem. I - and several others - are having big problems with motion sickness in OFP:DR due to the excessive headbobbing (and perhaps aided also by the FOV being < 90 degrees, as far as I can tell). My framerate is around 50, so thats not the culprit.

I have played a bunch of other FPS (CS, GR, R6, SWAT4, CoD, MoH, GRAW etc) for thousands of hours without any problems, but this game gives me motion sickness and heavy eye straining in just 15-30 minutes of play.

I have looked around for a setting in a config-file to turn it off, but there is none that is accessible.

Do you guys think it will be possible to disable the headbobbing in a mod?

I definately think the game looks interesting for an old tactical FPS player like myself, but unfortunately, I cant play the game until the headbobbing is gone.

:( Mike

Here is the problem. it is way easier of course to see around you as your running without it. if it becomes optional then no one will use it in MP and they will be doing more unrealistic hip shots or shooting when running with no consequences. I myself would rather have it then not as it makes you stop to shoot and also stop to look around @ distances.

Granted though this is a multiplayer point of view. if you had to make it optional, you would want the server config to set it, not the player config (except in single player)

My god it's not an option? I have not ventured into the gameplay options yet but I felt sure the head bobbing would be an option, like in most other games... because it really is quite severe in DR.

Unfortunately no :(

I could understand if headbobbing was mandatory in MP only, but it definately should be an option in SP and COOP. As you say, devs should know by now that this is a problem for a great deal of people.

Hopefully this can be fixed either by means of a patch or in a mod.

Sorry guys - I really can't see the complaint with this one. To be honest I didn't even notice that there *is* head-bobbing in [OFP: DR]! (Honestly!)

Now the head-bobbing in ArmA2 - that *was* severe. But I just don't see the problem here. I think the movement is nice and smooth, with a naturalistic undulation to it - there is a bit of sight wobble, but as much as you need to give the impression of a level of realism.

All in all I think Codemasters got the movement and character animations pretty much right.

I am NOT saying this just to antagonize you - if you have a problem then I believe you. I just want to balance it out by saying that I (and it has to be said my friends) don't have.

Sorry Guy - but I really don't see the point of your post. This is a well documented problem for a lot of people and there is NO WAY you can not notice the headbob in this game.

In normal movement it is pretty obvious, but the minute you sprint I have to actually look away from the screen.

It is NOT, in any way realistic. I for one do not run whilst shaking my head from side to side.

I am not saying this to antagonise you in any way, but this post is about a REAL issue which some of us would like a solution too, (as many games have provided in the past).

What I am saying is I didn't notice - which *I* don't...

As I said in my post I *believe* others if they say they have a problem - I'm just adding the balance that for others it clearly isn't.

:)

Sorry you guys are obviously having a problem - my friends and I are obviously lucky in that it doesn't present the problem it does for you!

Try it with 45 pounds + of military equipment. You would wobble more (guestimate on weight, my buddys army kevlar alone was that without a rucksac and weapon). You would wobble more i'd think then a flat run with none.

I must be lucky, I don't feel sick or notice it really, I look forward into the horizon and don't stare at the zero meters anim. I know about travel sickness having a medical problem with one ear after an incident .... I agree with Roco (for the second time) ;) (j/k) when I loaded up with Cobol in a woods game of paintball carrying some 25Kg wet boots (from the streams) and tiered muscles, it's dam hard not to weave or bob, dam hard to run.

Back to topic, the bob value can be adjusted server side ;) it effects all clients as it's the master.... I'll try to find out the value/ line.

Oh god, here we go with the realism argument...

Even with 45 pounds of kit, in RL I have peripheral vision and my eyes can track independant of my head movement, yadda yadda. So a very false and unrealistic bobbing is far from real life. It is an EFFECT that games producers introduce to TRY and simulate something. It can cause problems for some people if done poorly with a limited FOV and most producers realise this and include an option to disable it, or if they didn't they then patch it in pretty damn quickly.

If you want to talk realism, try doing more than a walk with full kit AND a Javelin launcher.

I really don't care about this, but i do care about some of you not getting it...

Always wanted some sort of a feature that would discourage players from running... There! This is only one thing that Cm has done amongst many. What some of you don't get is this: what you consider a iffy design choice, is infact a run&gun deterrent. And there are many with this game.

As dum as it may sound... stop running.

Think bros think :(

Ummm i can walk? I have my right mouse button set for the sprint.

As for the weight comment. I'm an advid archer and archery is in. With my 3d suit on, boots, backpack for the days lunch and drinks and such, arrows and bow, i wobble enough when walking epecially though high grass and uneven terrain. Now if i ran (which i wouldn't but if i did) i would have to swing the bow with each stride . This would create a wobble the same as i see with this military game with way more equipment and weight. What resolution are you running it at? I'm @ 1680x1050. maybe the effect is more @ less resolution. The fov looks fine to me also.

In the editor you can set a patrol to walk around a building. They then walk around the building. We can jog or sprint, we cannot do the same as the patrol. Casual walk. We cannot walk, show me the footage of a player walking. Sry to jump, but you cannot walk, I will eat my boots if wrong.

I dont really want to fire up a realism discussion.

I will just say, that I have never heard of anyone getting motion sickness while running in real life.

When you run, your eyes/brain compensate for your headbobbing and allows you to keep a fixed and steady view of the horizon or whatever you are looking at.

So the experience of running in real life is very different from running in OFP:DR, making - I guess - the experience in OFP:DR unrealistic by definition.

All I want is a solution to reduce/remove the excessive headbobbing to allow myself - and a lot of people like me - to play the damn game without being sick after a few minutes of play.

A lot of games have already addressed this problem, so I dont think that is too much to ask. I am just disappointed that CM did not include the option from the beginning.

Madmike... does it do the same to you when you crouch walk? (doesn't bob nearly as much)

No, crouch walking and sideways strafing are ok, its walking (which is semi-running) and sprinting that is giving me a headache. Literally :(

might be a solution on the horizon MadMike. There is walking in this game... when you zoom in and advance, you walk. So maybe some talented modder like hmm letsee...Tinker, might try and implement the walk without zooming, in exchange he woudn't have to eat his boots.

Just note, the game must be unpacked to run mods though.

@ ROCO, I'm @ 1680x1050 also on 22'' monitor.

I know the PS3 version you can walk. The control stick determines the players speed the softer you push the slower you go. You can basically crawl in the PS3 version.

That would be great as I really want to give this game a try
