Need some modding advice.

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the right forum but I need some basic modding advice.

I've done some missions ( which I thought were pretty good ) on IGOR but apart from that I have no modding experience. I feel I have a great idea for a mod with a good storyline, a solid gameplay structure and interesting multiplayer ideas. But before I start working on that mod I'd like to cut my teeth by making something smaller. Could anyone recommend a game editor ( UT3, Crysis etc ) that would be best suited to playing around with adding custom 3D models, making missions in a campaign structure, changing gameplay elements and adding multiplayer gametypes. It doesn't have to be the easiest to work with. Just what will more likely get the best results and be better for me and my team in the long run as a learning experience.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me some advice on the matter.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you want to create a new mod for GR or some other game? And you want to try any game editor available just to 'cut your teeth' in modding a bit more? I think it may be a little counter-productive to 'train' on tools you won't use for the mod you ultimately want to create, but OK.

As for making missions in a campaign structure, changing gameplay elements and adding multiplayer gametypes - it probably doesn't get much easier than Ghost Recon's IGOR. Many other (moddable) games (e.g. Crysis, Far Cry, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. etc.) use the Lua scripting language, so you might want to check it out.

When it comes to creating new 3D content, 3DS Max is used for many other games as well (e.g. Quake Series, Assissin's Creed etc.), so it is a good way to start, although a pricy one. A free alternative (for other games) is the open-source modeler Blender, although its learning curve is probably just as steep as 3DSM's.

I've used IGOR before and its easy. I basically want to make a mod for GR4 when it comes out. But only if it comes with a SDK. But I think I'll use Crysis as a starting point because it seems to offer the best package for extensive modding for what Ive been told.

Thanks for the advice.
