Tinker
Using AVG here for a long time now. Last few days I am suddenly getting annoying pop ups at random times through the day asking me to upgrade to the full paid edition. Just had 1 while in game, it dropped me to desktop, then my PC locked up. Anyone know how to turn such nonesense off?
Rocky
I have not had that issue ... Yet. I was thinking about changing to another free one anyway, so if it is giving you problems maybe look around for other free AV. There are two that rate higher than AVG one is Avira but I forget the other one. They may have pop ups too though ....

CR6
Using AVG here for a long time now. Last few days I am suddenly getting annoying pop ups at random times through the day asking me to upgrade to the full paid edition. I'm using AVG 8.5 too and have got the occasionaly pop up, maybe 1-2x a month. I doubt there is a way to turn it off as that's what we have to put up with for free software. seriously though i have seen more things ge through avg then any of the others. Microsoft has morrow in beta currently and the windows live one care has a 90 day trial which should get you by till the free is released. Just curious Roco, which antivirus brand do your prefer? A charity I do network support at got a trojan (through someone's USB drive) last year and OneCare, MacAfee and AVG couldn't remove it. I finally got rid of it with a free trial of Kapersky. I wonder how good Microsoft's antivirus will be since it probably can't be that good to put likes of MacAfee and Norton out of business ... CrowmanUK
At the moment I'm using Kaspersky but after AVG bloated up the last version I moved to Avira and was reasonably happy with it, theres even a way to stop the popup windows on the free version if you look around http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php

CrowmanUK
Well if somebody had installed and wanted to know I would have told you, but you beat me to it you ingenious Scot! Well done young man and a pat on the back in your general direction. I found the pc started up and shut down a hell of a lot faster than it did with AVG
Giampi
If you wanna stick with Windows then I would recommend Avira above all. There is a pop-up suggesting to upgrade to Premium version everytime you update but overall is much better than any other free AV. BTW Rocky, the other AV is Avast
Dai-San
So I assume it's just me that has a hideously slow update download speed, 1hr 20 mins remaining 1.1kb/sec on 10meg cable Edited August 9, 2009 by Dai-San

Avira update this is, just giving it a try. Does Avira integrate with Outlook/Firefox etc, AVG automatically integrated and scanned downloads etc but Avira gives no indication, even the documentation doesn't mention email scanning. ROCO*AFZ*
Personally i prefer the corporates like Symantec's endpoint, but for the home user... Live one care would not have let the trojan get on the pc. The problem is once your infected, most antiviruses have problems removing them. Use malwarebytes from www.malwarebytes.org to remove the trojan. The free version should do the trick. Here is the problem with free antiviruses. Most do not detect "unknown" viruses. They can only do what they have definitions for. That is usually the difference between paid and free. Oh and btw... anyone notice how slow there IE is with AVG free. It's cuz they install a toolbar also. Bleh! As for Avira... it's not popular enough for me to see anyone having it installed. Here is a review on it... http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Per...4-10877501.html Note there is ad placement. One more thing... Here is reviews on the beta MS product... it will be free http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/...th-screenshots/ http://www.pcworld.com/article/167246/firs...essentials.html http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/913...makes_the_grade

JohnTC02
I'm using Vista with AVG 8.5 free, so far I haven't had any problems apart from those annoying pop-ups. Before I had AVG I used Norton Internet Security, frequently getting viruses so when my subscription expired I moved to AVG since then I haven't had one virus. As Roco said it dose slowdown IE but I don't find it a huge problem. Just updated AVG no problems here, 16kb update took about 30 seconds. Tinker
Some interesting posts! Not too keen on Roco`s suggestion though: Buy it...LOL! Have not had a pop up now for 3 days. I did reinstall windows 2 weeks back, guess it may just be set up to run the first week or 2. But it was at least 2 a day for the first week at least. Leaving things as they are, not a big deal really, but being chucked out of game is a little annoying for any type of software notice. For me truthfully that would make it work buying, especially when we play matches in ladders and such. 1st time one of those pop ups kicked me out would be it's last.
