ARMA2 vs Ghost Recon 4

Recommended Posts

If Ghost Recon 4 is anything less than ARMA 2. Im done with GR. cant wait to get ARMA2.

[video removed (as already covered HERE]

by the way, anybody remember the name of the game (trainer) that came out around 2002-2003ish? it was based on Operation Flashpoint but I think the game (trainer) in question came in modules that you had to pay for individually. also, wasnt it for military use only?

thnx.

Sometimes, less is more

ARMA goes for a complexity that you'll never see in a GR title (IMHO), that's not to say realism needs to be compromised though. I think ARMA tries to be a jack of all trades, where GR tends to specialise.

Whatever you think though, it is possible to own and enjoy both games.... I hope!

ps. that was a cool vid. 3rd person option/free look etc For leaning, it sounds like you have to press the lean key to come out of the lean, I think the GRAW system where the lean automatically stops when you start moving a regular speed is great.

pps. You are thinking of VBS I think.

yes, VBS. that was it. as for both games, Im sure thats what it will come down to. I did the same with GR and OFP, then GR with BF2, then GR with COD. LOL.

Ive always like OFP, the only downside was the graphics.

that video was already posted in the ArmA2 forum > http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=52668

*and all discussion about it should be done there.

will GR4 be able to compete with ARMA2?
as no details of GR 4 have been released it is Impossible to compare the two yet

but I would imagine it will be a different style of gameplay, so wont be trying or need to "compete" and Tactical game fans who by then will already have ArmA 2 & OFP:DR will buy it as well

that would be VBS 1 ...and a check of the First-Person Tactical games forums here, would have found the > Virtual Battlespace 1 subforums ;)

I must have been incapacitated and missed that punch line.

____

Rocky and Pave Low are of course correct...ArmA* go for an infinite Combined Arms role in a vast expanse while GR* is pigeon-holed into a small unit SOF role in confined spaces.

Both have their role, but should not be compared.

Well, I rarely buy games, just try them and move back to GR/GRAW...I am what you might call a GR/GRAW deciple.

But in this case, I decided to stay a while and have "lashed out" and bought ARMA2 via steam.

I like it alot....and to the point above re. needing high end PC spec's, yes, it is a hog. I like it even more now that I have upgraded my graphics card to a 260 GTX and oc'd the heck out of it....also running it on a 4Ghz core 2 o/c.

I love it so far and as the mods role in I know I will love it even more. Checking out some of the new custom coop games now and they look great. The editor is real time and so easy to use, one of my mates created a mission in no time and heck, he can hardly even turn on a PC for himself (not quite, well you get the idea anyway).

So I think I might be becoming a convert until the new GR appears on the scene. At least they'll have something to align compare to.

Assuming the demo is still available on steam, I highly recomend you all have a go.

We did have a crash though..so even it's not 100% perfect :)

Nightvision?

Played a few scenarios here this morning. Eye for an Eye is a night mission, yet I am unable to switch on my NV? wth.

Tried the last scenario, another night mission. This time I have NV, but as I enter a village, with fully working street lights, switch NV off and I can see sod all? I am stood under a large working street light, that beams across the road and lights up houses with NV on. Switch off, cannot even see the working streetlight I am stood under.

NV has always been great in all the GR games, hope I am making a mistake here with my keys maybe? Night missions are always my favourite. This alone has made me leave both missions early so far.

well with all these comparisons lets not forget a couple of other things on the horizon...unless I've missed some very important news which is quite possible Sky Gods and Ground Branch and having seen a little of ARMA 1 and what happened to original GR(not bashing GRAW series. it is what is and I enjoyed both) thinking more of the betrayal of GR 2 for PC and what not...from what I've read here and their forums in the past its those two BFS titles I'm looking forward to...

What I don't like about Arma1/2 demo's are that they're so involving, ie, I don't want to build field hospitals etc, but I do want to play a tactical game, and thats where GRAW2006/7 are superior.

GRAW is nothing like COD4, so I don't see why we have to move GRAW towards the realism and tinkerism of Arma2.

Nightvision?

There is a mod out to fix the NV HDR : http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=78882

There is also a mod to enable full screen or dirty lens NV : http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=76882

Here it is a screenshot running full screen NV hehe, not realistic of course but a damn big advantage at night :D :

Exactly, to be honest from a personal point of view, I would not even try, if GR4 was to be like [GR] in it's core values it would mince Arma2 to pieces. Arma2 (without kicking a downed dog) is too PC demanding (for the average PC) to complex (5 gazillion key binds) tries to do everything and does little with excellence.

Comparing all other Ghost recon titles with Ghost recon from RSE is totally unfair as the products after RSE have very little of the original. I'm still waiting for the true OGR2 (modern day variants like GRAW are not included as sequels).

Titles like: 'ARMA2 vs Ghost Recon' 4 are just pointless..... lets go 'Alien v Preditor 4'

Ground Branch ? Are they still working on this ? Arma 2 is a great game mig, its like a super GR1, much more than a super GRAW. ;)

You got to be kidding me !

Box of chocolates

Arma series is like a box of average chocolates ... the whole box

GR1 ([Ghost Recon]) is like a special box of exclusive spec ops chocolates, only special select flavours.

Gr4 will now have to compete with OFP DR.

If you've seen the latest vids, you'll know what I mean....granted, diehard fans will probably buy it anyway, but if they want to appeal to a wider audience, they'll have to offer something up to date, if not class leading.

I hope GR4 wont be like ARMA II.

Arma2 is so dissapointing. My girlfried had buyed as the birthday present for me.

2 days later it was on amazon for 50% of the price. My girlfriend suggest to buy something what works. ^^

GR4 must have limited maps, suitable graphics and be GR4. I hope they dont add tanks, cars like in crysis. So all will take Helis, Tankls and stuff, and the tactical gameplay of the infantry will lack.

Kinf Regards

Ares

Arma2 is better then GR sorry.
Any chance that maybe they're just different types of tac-shooters? And I'm not being snarky. Also, it's real hard to compare games that are about 6 years apart.

One reason I don't think GR should be compared to Arma 1/2 is that the games don't feel at all like each other. Arma 1/2 is much slower-paced, is geared more to open-field combat and has a more "field combat strategy" feel to it. Often, in Arma 1/2, I see enemies looking/aiming right at me but not firing as if they were teeing off a golf shot. That's something you wouldn't see in GR. Though stealth can be very important in GR, it's definitely has a faster and more intense feel. To me, it's kind of like comparing the US Army to Navy Seals. I'll just put it this way - when I play Arma 1/2, my palms don't sweat.

Arma 2 may eventually be a great game just like Arma 1 was turned into an excellent game by means of patches. Right now, my issues with the game are:

1) performance needs to be drastically improved (via patches)

2) entire vegetation implementation is a total mess (horrible texture/LOD popping, butt-ugly LOD resolutions, LOD color changes - see http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=78423 for better explanation)

3) LOTS of bugs (amazingly so for even a newly released game)

4) Personally, I find the terrain artwork pretty gross and very repetitive.

5) Don't care for the rural, poor, farmland Slavic scenario at all

I think that BIS, in trying to push more realistic graphics, has created some issues for what is purported to be a "combat simulator".

Aside from that, I'm very excited about what the future holds for Arma 2.

But here's hoping for a great sequel to GR that's truly in the GR spirit! Meanwhile, I'm playing Arma for fun and Arma 2 to become familiar with it so that when the big patches come, I'm ready for it.
