=warcloud=
I wasn't sure if this should be in here "third person shooter" or action/adventure?. Found this in my inbox Home | Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction | Ubisoft Edit: moved to "action/adventure" Edited June 3, 2009 by Pave Low
rookie
They have been showing some Gameplay at E3. It was 3rd person. And after the very disappointing Double Agent the coming title Conviction looks really really good. Even better, that it will be released this fall. Sup
Honestly, how does this not look awesome to you guys? Splinter cell, from the start, was action movie style stealth -- stylishly grounded in reality, but focusing on the exploits of a superhuman, super aggressive covert operative. Now instead of relying on the top 2% of gamers who are extremely fast with their mouse and good at videogames to have the intended '24' flavour, ubisoft has built an entire system of new, seemingly pretty innovative (i play a lot of games and havent seen this) gameplay system to encourage the kind of stylish heroics Sam Fisher is shown doing in cutscenes and promotional material. Nobody is ever going to claim Conviction is the world's most realistic spy game, but it doesnt look any less realistic than Splinter Cell -- and it looks a hell of a lot more accessible, deep, and stylish. Malleus
I think we may have played a different game there. Splinter Cell never was "action movie style stealth" - it was a classic stealth game in the vein of the Thief games (albeit quite castrated compared to those), and even when they tried to make it action movie (moving train level, bathhouse action scene) it felt forced and out of place. And Fisher never was "superhuman super agressive covert op". The only superhuman thing about him was the ability remain hidden more easily than a real person could. And you sure as hell didn't have to be extremely fast with the mouse to play the game - it is finely playable with a controller, which is a lot slower. You only needed to be observant and plan your moves and use your tools to win. Needless to say Conviction is the complete opposite of all of that - and now that it's been turned into another generic hollywood revenge story TPS with cover system and gimmicky stealth, it fits your description nicely. I'm not saying the original SCs were realistic, but they had a style, a unique concept in story and gameplay, and now it's all thrown out of the window. Sure, it's still action stealth, but R6-Vegas is still tactical, right? EDIT: Oh and of course, this move makes all the sense financially, since they can attract a lot more customers with this accessible, streamlined spectacular action thingy. I don't blame ubisoft, but I can't bring myself to like this move. Edited December 20, 2009 by Malleus

I'm not saying the original SCs were realistic, but they had a style, a unique concept in story and gameplay, and now it's all thrown out of the window I don't want to argue this point to death, but seriously, you dont see Sam as very superhuman? One hit knockouts, the ability to completely immobilize someone from behind with one arm around their neck, insta kill super magic knife in chaos theory that prevents its victims from screaming, the ability to *walljump* and hang from ledges forever, super high tech thermal goggles... With the exception of the goggles and the knife, that's all stuff i have direct personal experience with (boxing and jiujitsu) and it sure as hell is not within the capability of the world's most athletic 50 yearold man. Get a friend and try and put a chokehold on him, see how still you can keep him while you point your arm over his shoulder to aim like sam does. Find a narrow hallway and try to prop yourself up in the top of it. I'd dare that sam fisher's new superhero gunslinging heroics are *more* realistic than the existing herculean climbing, grappling and hand to hand skills. And this new game doesnt really look much like a third person cover shooter to me. Not any more than sc1 was -- you can use cover, but it doesnt exactly look like the most viable way to take guys out. Melee stealth kills and the new mark and execute long range stealth kills look about the same as sniping and koing guys in the old games. Just more stylishly animated. There's a definite focus on staying in the shadows and planning your actions in this new game too, by the looks of it, your actions just happen a little faster when you get down to doing them. Malleus
You know actually, the super silent knife kills and the one hit knockout thing were bothering me from day one. But they could've been improved without changing the game itself. And I certainly don't see the new gunslinging action as more realistic than the old acrobatics. But I don't want to argue this to death either, just wished to make a point on why someone (me) doesn't see Conviction as an awesome thing. This is a different game - in gameplay, style, concept, everything - not the Splinter Cell I like(d).

Touche, if that stuff always bothered you i can see why ubisoft choosing to escalate that stuff (sam fisher's combat/takedown ability) even more turned you off to it. Tinker
2 Player Coop Walkthrough Judging by the smiley, it didn't quite impress you, did it? Reserving judgement at present. I did read an interview with 1 of the devs recently, but cannot find it. He basically said that it is not fees-able to cater for the small niche that preferred the original SC concept. Enough said. CR6
Reserving judgement at present. I did read an interview with 1 of the devs recently, but cannot find it. He basically said that it is not fees-able to cater for the small niche that preferred the original SC concept. Enough said. Haha, sounds familiar ... seems like they've made the same conclusions about the R6 and GR series too - the original concept is not good enough so all 3 Clancy franchises are starting to play more the same as time goes on. I wonder what measures Ubi actually uses to determine how much of the market wants certain types of gameplay? Fan comments on forums? I somehow doubt they have any objective measures of what the public wants, otherwise we wouldn't have seen Conviction going back to the drawing board. It's more about executives decisions based on what other games are "hot" currently and game designer's tastes.
WhiteKnight77
With their profits slipping, one would think that Ubi would wake up and smell the coffee, but again, even the CEO has his head buried in the sand from the looks of things. =warcloud=
I hear the uk release date is april 16th. Will there be a pc demo to try out maybe?, i hear ubisoft have a new digital rights management system for their pc games, i can understand the reasons for online play but not so sure about having to stay connected to their servers to play single player, i like steams option to play offline. Tinker
Not seen any mention of a demo so far. Kinda looking forward to this game. I just hope this new system does not completely kill the stealth feel to the game, depending on how you choose to play it. If their server records our progress, maybe unlocking SP from internet connection could be achieved, once completed the game 1 time. Otherwise it seems a bad deal TBH. I usually play SP games off line, no interuptions, no issues. No disconnections. I have nephews that play PC games, that have no Internet besides 56k, will this be acceptable for SP? Only if Mom and Dad do not want to use the phone, maybe. From what has been said, it needs to be a broadband connection though how they would know is unknown. =warcloud=
Not seen any mention of a demo so far. I can't see a sp or coop demo before or after retail imho. It takes time and effort to make one and then how will it work out with the constant live connection to their servers?, a lot of work just for a demo. kleaneasy
Excuse my ignorance but do PC demos usually utilise DRM??
WhiteKnight77
Not really, but more companies, Ubi included, have started to due to piracy. Apparently having a SecuROM or Starforce protected demo .exe makes it harder to pirate the retail game with an unprotected .exe. Unfortunately, from my viewpoint, it still does not work. Ubi had a way to find out if a person had a pirated version of a game. They even sued a company in North Carolina for a leak of said game. Ubi put an intentional bug in the Assassin's Creed. By not helping those who complained of said bug, Ubi could sell more games, without DRM. The thing is, another company does this very thing. Stardock does not use any DRM of any sort and while I am not totally sure how they determine if said game is pirated or not, retail gamers of Stardock's games do not suffer the problems suffered by those who pirate said games, but it has to be an intentional bug of some sort. Stardock's customers are also not treated like criminals before they buy the game.
